I have a 1970gto 400/350 4bbl with a th400 (Automatic trans) it is a leaking mad man since I have left it sit (for a year) and would like to have the rear seal replaced before driving it to my new home (it resides at my parents.) does anyone know if the seal can be taken out without taking the trans off the motor. (basically can I do it myself.) or should I take it to a dealer for assistance?
any knowledge on this would be helpful. thanks |

Those rear seals are pretty easy to replace if you have, or can barrow the right tools. If you don't have the correct tools you have to be carefull not to gouge up the area where the seal is installed. A chisle or punch can be used to collaps the seal to remove it, but becareful. When installing the seal with out the installer make sure you get it straight before you start hammering it in there. You might want to try using a hole saw on a pice of 2x4 to go over the output shaft so you can apply even pressure on install. Also smear a little vasiline on the inside of the seal, this helps it slide over the shaft easier.
