3rd gear had gotten stiff to grab so i split the 6 speed open to install a new synchro. Found 6th gear on the mainshaft missing a tooth. No idea when that happened. The problem now is I -cannot- get a gear for it. There's about 5 different ratios you can put in there and none of the mainshaft/countershaft pairs are available. You can sometimes find one but not the other, which does nothing. I've called around, called Richmond, they're not supplying them right now. Makes me wish I'd have opened this thing up years ago, maybe I could have bought some then.

So, I'm just going to put this back together and take it easy in 6th. The new rear end is 3.00:1 so 5th should be good for high speed. 5th is direct drive and strong.

Also i painted. This is black rustoleum mixed with ceramic microspheres; home made Lizard skin. Shot with an undercoat gun. Came out alright. I'm figuring this car will be a booming hot mess so I'm trying to get some insulation in place. Going to do the same on the inside, I think I'll match the old turquoise.

As an aside here's the twin turbo v12 Benz I picked up a little over a year ago. Has distracted me from the Pontiac ;-). Dirt cheap for what you get. Turn up the boost and these make like 700lb/ft. More on www.hal600.tumblr.com

Anyway. Next is put the engine/trans back in for the last time, build some exhaust, and hook up some wires. I'm planning to ignore some things for now until this thing finally gets driven.

Stance looks good on the '65. Your S benz has got my attention, these were supposed to be one of the finest built Mercs ever. They made a great looking coupe version also but the 4 door sedan is probably easier to live with. I have ridden in really high mile S taxi diesels which look and ride like they are new. I'm surprised it looks like you've had a lot of problems on yours. I have a '95 E300 Diesel and it has been the most reliable, care free car I have owned. The parts and labor rates scares most people away from these cars but if you can do the work yourself, life is good!

Looking good, and that's a huge understatement.

Amazing work you're doing in your home shop, I'm humbled seeing your skill level and drive on this project.

Haven't scratched the paint yet?

Haven't scratched the paint no kidding... flinging roll cage bars in and out of it hundreds of times too. I've said that myself. Thank you for the kind words.

Ok and on the S600, it's really been a solid car, I wouldn't say I've had -alot- of problems with it, but maybe that's just me I studied up on those cars and shopped for a while to get a clean one. It had that leaking hydraulic shock when I bought it so the seller knocked of $1000, and working on the "active body control" suspension isn't a big deal. mbworld.org etc. are great resources. Breaking the transmission, I'd call that my fault, I did reflash the PCM for 22psi boost and I could feel it start slipping on hard upshifts. I put in a TransGo shift kit sold for the Mopar NAG1 (Merc calls it a 722.6) and maybe the calibrations are different, maybe I should have made it "relearn" itself more before beating on it, or maybe i just F'd it up, but it smoked itself soon after. I rebuilt it myself, works great now. The other stuff has been pretty much routine maintenance / I gave it a tuneup. "Service B". You are right in that you'd either be willing to pay out the ass (no) or turn some wrenches (yes) to run one. It has, however, brought a whole new level of complexity, and competence, to my mechanic repertoire. Then again so has this white Pontiac. Totally worth it.

Next week I'm driving the kids to grandma's house in Colorado in the Benz, no better way to fly.

here's a great writeup of it, watch the video --> http://apidaonline.com/index.php/art...heaper-sleeper

Ok, Pontiac. Made some exhaust pipes. Not much space for this. Trying to make it as quiet as I can.

Shorty headers and 3" down pipes. Long tubes... Maybe someday I'll make some. This is actually the tightest fitting set of pipes ever on this car. Well maybe except the single exhaust that came on the 326. Ive flattened headers and cussed that bolt behind the center ports on a pontiac engine enough to appreciate this.

Needs an H crossover, I'll do the old paint a stripe down the pipes and see where it burns off thing for placement. 2.5" mufflers because they are thinner, I'm fighting ground clearance, and I figure a lot of 3" exhaust is overkill. Someday maybe some sweet straight pipes or oval tubing, for now super turbos.

Ride height is cranked down all the way. The spring rates btw are 250 in rear 600 in front.

Mr. Whiskers looks just as mean as that Tempest he's guarding.

Default Thanks

And Andrew I was reading on ls1tech or lateral g.net about how to make the fans work, I guess the gmpp e67 pcm I have can't do pwm fan running, anyway I saw your name a lot. Also that you have a Mercury cougar that looks nice.

Tonight I was in the garage and check out this moth that landed on the car. I almost thought it was a bat cause we have those here too. Ima call this good luck moth.
