There is a tool available (e.g. NAPA) that will remove the shaft seal without removing the shaft from the case. Does not require pan removal. The solenoid connector can be removed by lightly squeezing the two tabs together and then pushing the connector outward and out of the case. Connector uses an o-ring. U-tube videos exist showing shaft seal replacement with the tool. Lots of opinions on the best way to get the pan to seal to the trans case.

Good morning.. thx .. yes i remember the Tool ..I used for a th350 years ago .. habe to look if it works at a TH400 too .. years ago I swaped the shift linkage seal with removing all the shaft ..a tricky job to do
About the solenoid connector O ring seal .. only to disconnect the wire and push from inside out ? Not turn the solenoid connector plastic case a 1/8 turn ? It’s not easy to pull it out ..it’s still good and strong placed in the transmission Case

Use a 3/4" 12 point socket on the fingers of the connector to compress them and the connector will pull out.
Does your transmission have a metal clad linkage seal or does it have an O ring on the shaft, as some of the early THM 400s have?

Either push outward from the inside or pull from the outside. No turning needed. Connector is held in place by the two tabs on the inside that you must lightly squeeze together (inwards) to remove. The tabs only move a little to release it. Requires two hands. While lightly squeezing tabs together with one hand try pulling the connector out with your other hand. To install push the connector in from the outside until the tabs engage the case and you can’t pull it out.

Default Th400

So ....finally the shift shaft seal was easily removed with the tool I bought years ago for a TH350 ..worked find at the TH400 too .. at my other 65 TH 400 Bonneville I remember it doesn’t worked ..and if I remember correctly there was in addition an O ring seal ..but not sure..It’s 10 years ago ...

The kick down plastic solonoid was easy removed too .. pull and Push .. and than it comes out ..cleans ..new o ring with some sealer and build in

.. than I installed an new filter .. the original was from AC .. sits nice ..the new from ATP .. needs a lot of attention to get in correct position .. finally I heard a knock .. it was the kick down solonoid switch case that’s rattling .. the new filter pressed heavy against .. after trying to bend the case back in position the lower holding metal broke .. now I need a new Kick down solonoid switch .. can’t fix now the case .. and filter doesn’t sit correctly...

Will buy an Fram Filter .. and how about the solonoid? And special to think about ? Rick Auto offers the parts I need ..

Is there at the speedometer cable connection an seal too ? Can I replace, too?
Look at the last pic ..it’s hold with a screw and clamp ..can I pull it ? Doesn’t move easy ..

The rear extension seal and the converter seal was east to swap ..
