Default Flex Plate

What flex plates are you guys using? I thought I bought a JW flex plate but it has no stamped name on it. It just lost some teeth during a hard start episode. Pulled the transmission and removed the flex plate today

I've used the same TCI for 20 or so years. It's a no hole version that's quite heavy.

What's the pro or cons to a heavier flex plate?

That part I don't know. Some say its an inertia thing. I just bought it and used it because I ground the teeth of my other one.

Are you in need of one? I have one from when I swapped my car from auto to manual trans.

I run a Meziere billet flexplate. Absolutely love it. I had my starter shear the teeth off of a TCI. The Meziere piece is super strong and very very nice

Ordered a TCI plate today, looked at the billet Meziere unit but it nearly double the price.

I run an ATI one. Works well. Ran a Scat one previously and it was OK too.

I looked at the ati, but went with the TCI because it's USA made. I wasn't too much more. The Meziere is billet which is badass but it was $125 more and I wasn't sure I needed all that

I've cracked two OEM flexplates in the past, one associated with a B&M shift kit (college days before I fully understood driveline shock), and the second, apparently 100,000 miles of wear & tear.

This time I went with the PRW Extreme duty from Butler:

Very impressed with how robust it is.

w the e85 we knocked the teeth off tci and ATI. now it is not the flexplates fault the starter bucked however, the PRW that replaced those has been great so far.

I bought the TCI Blanchard ground flexpalte for 350$.. The Mezerie billet was only 95$ more, wish I would have gotten it. Not all that much more.
But I had a 60$ CAT flex-plate in service for years and it never gave me a problem.

If you foot brake off of idle like I do it's better to have a light flex plate as it will spool up faster. If you're launching off a brake, then better to have a heavier unit and use the inertia to get you out of the hole. I have a TCI with holes in it it's been great and it's been in there for around 25 years. If you have a locked out distributor then a good chance you can destroy a fly wheel but if you run a mechanical advance to get you correct timing at idle most likely you will never have an issue.

What power level are you at with this?

Currently foot braking, but have a trans brake installed. I do have the timing locked out and use a MSD start retard. Knocks out 20 for start up.

I have never understood why some people lock out the timing. I did that once and had nothing but problems. With the mechanical advance working it starts very nice and idles much better too. It spools up faster on launch, drives around in the pits better too. The advance is all in for the whole 1/4 mile so I can't see a downside of running the mechanical advance. I'm sure it works for some but it doesn't work for me.
