Default Chicken wire

Exactly when was chicken wire started and stopped during Pontiac production? How far in the 69 model year was the chicken wire used?

I believe the cowl screens using metal mesh was used on all '69s with '70 changing to the 3 plastic inserts.

I replaced the chicken wire on my '69 Custom S with the plastic inserts from Ames for '71-'72. Well worth the $23 and look is a lot cleaner. Just pop them right into place.

My 68 has original mesh with 4 screws and a clip. It may have started before 68

Thanks - funny cause when I found that chicken wire on my 69’s cowl I thought someone made it at home…now I don’t know - I set aside with the garage trash but haven’t discarded it yet.

Chicken wire was used in the 68/69 Pontiac A bodies.
However, the plastic inserts are shown in the 69 assembly manual in addition to the screen.

I don't ever recall seeing a 69 with the plastic inserts however. I always thought the plastic was used for the 1970 models

68 / early 69

It appears the changeover to plastic was around Feb '69

with an update in Mar '69

there was a thread awhile ago about this. they were probably using up stock before the changeover if it was intended for a Feb 69 change date. I've never owned or seen an original 69 with the plastic. of course as a punk kid with my first 69, that was the first thing I tore off the car and replaced with the plastic because I was sure it was some hack job from a previous owner! getting tougher to find an original car that hasn't been "fixed" in the last 55 years.

side note, if you're chasing an original screen with the correct contouring vs the junk flat repops - 69 GP used the identical screen. I scored one off ebay a few years ago on a gamble and it was exact.
