Hey Greg, great question as I wondered the same exact thing when I originally got the original paperwork on the car and a photo of the trim tag. Here's a link to an article on PHS on special order paints.

http://phscollectorcarworld.blogspot...int-codes.html

I read about it somewhere else as well and can't find it. I researched well in to the night on this. It appears as though, depending on the plant, they used different nomenclature for that spot on the cowl tag for special paint. --, 1,1-, just left it blank or used the actual long paint code. I was able to confirm my color from the build sheet and spots on the car. Also, there is no indication anywhere that there was a vinyl top.

Interesting article. I expect that some of the 'document hounds' around here may know the answer to why the '1' would be used there next to the '-'.

The first digit identifies lower body color
" 1 " identified special paint, as opposed to an alpha code standard color
"-" is just a spacer

IF it would have had a White Vinyl Top, it would display 1-1
like the trim tag sample i posted earlier in thread [ 1-1 ]
Which was also a Pontiac Plant A-Body

IF it would have had a White Painted Roof [two-tone]
it would display 1-C

No real need for the spacer [ - ] On This Car , but they included it anyway.
And this explanation should only be applied to a 1968 Pontiac Plant Special Paint A-body , to keep things simple.
Not all plants used a dash/spacer

Here is an Arlington Plant , 1968 Carnival Red with White Vinyl Top trim tag. [ 11 ]
No dash/spacer

Can also note there is no Vinyl Top option listed on the Window Sticker for the Windward Blue car. fwiw

I believe I know the color now, from all the places that were not painted. Plus I know the history of the car all the way back to new.

Default Update

Just a quick update: So far everything is going as planned. Found a few areas of rust and the left side inner wheelhouse was repaired with fiberglass. More than I anticipated when I bought it but should be pretty nice when all said and done. When I removed the fenders, the cowl was still the original color. I polished it up a bit and I've never wanted to paint a car so bad in my life! Funny color though this Windward Blue. To the naked eye, the color is almost teal-ish whereas in the photos it shows a darker more blue color. Really unique! I also have found some parts from some of you guys...so thank you PY!!

Did anyone see the 69 chrome bumper GTO on eBay. It says it is original. I do not see it listed on the PHS sheet. Does anyone know this car? Marc.

Can't be original...Well, they say, 'never say never'...but I say if it's a '69, the chrome bumper is not original.
