Default '74 SD 4-speed on eBay - Be Careful!

You have probably seen the "project" white '74 4-speed SD on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1974-...QQcmdZViewItem

The seller is not exactly forthcoming or free with information. My nephew has been trying to get more info on the car from him and it's like pulling teeth, says he's very busy. Notice that he claims the car has the original drivetrain yet shows a photo of a transmission from a 1976 Corvette. He claims to have the build sheet but rather shows a dealer order form (we have asked). The car is next to a wall so it does not show the left side of the car very well and the quarter panel that has been replaced - is he hiding something? He shows a W8 block but not the VIN on the block. My nephew has asked repeatably for more pictures and info but just gets the run around or no response at all.

This may be a great car and the real deal but if anyone is serious about it I'd be very careful and really look at the car first - before any cash exchanges hands. Good Luck!

I've been watching that one too, if you click on the feedback and read the last 2 pages it definately makes you wonder. I saw that trans VIN pic and couldn't understand that either.

You actually talked to Miles? Brewter give us the info on the car then. I would be interested in the car but as some people on this site have said he is a little difficult to deal with or get in touch with. I have not done business with him before but know others that have.

Brew - Charlie has talked to him as well and asked him for information and pictures (before it was on eBay) - he has given none and then it showed up on eBay several days later - but still not the real specifics. I have asked him questions a couple of times and got excuses. When I had my car up for sale I answered every question to the best of my ability and as honestly as I could. I posted all of those questions on the auction - notice he hasn't posted any questions. Do you think no one has asked him any? I don't....he's been asked the same kind of questions we are now asking and he chooses to leave things very grey rather than get them out in the open in black and white.

Has he answered any questions from you like why is there a transmission from a 1976 Corvette shown on the auction? (Thought it was "all original drivetrain"?). Why not a few more pictures of important items like the carb and EGR valve that would sort of prove it is a real 4-speed SD? Why take a picture of the "W8" and not show the VIN stamp on the block too? Why not roll it out in the shop so he can at least get a few decent pictures of both sides?

I'm not trying to be "a Dick" (even though I am), I'm just saying that I don't think everything about this car is being said or shown and if you are interested in pursuing this car make sure before you buy. I'd love to see it in your garage Brew, IF it is what he says it is.

I see what Dick is saying.

I counted 5 recent misrepresented cars in his feedback...one that the car bought ended up as a Clone.

maybe people aren't clicking on the "seller" tab under feedback. His buyer feedback is perfect, the seller part is where he gets the negatives. Not saying the car isn't what it is supposed to be, but after reading some of those, I'd go see it in person.

Dick, Not that I could ever afford a SD, but with you guys around I wouldn't buy a lemon. That's what makes this site so great.

Did the trans issue ever get resolved? I remember a 69 ra4 judge the seller had on ebay months back. First time it went to 150 and it did not meet reserve. A week later it was on again at 50k with no reserve. It bid up to 108 and I dont know what happened with it then? Suposedly it sold? The Sd he has looks like a nice project but I would have to see it in person.

Neither me nor my nephew has heard anything else about the Trans or anything else for that matter. Brew - no intake? He has an LS2X pictured?? Doesn't that go with the car??

Agree 110% with you weranc55, looks like as neat project but look at it in person!

I guess Gregs Gto bought the car for 27k last night on ebay. Good buy. There is some money to be made on that car if advertised properly with a different seller.

Hello! It is always a good buy when a roundport TA 4-speed with a solid body, numbers matching drivetrain with distr, and carb can be had for under 30K. Good buy Greg!

Greg - Congrats, give us a "real" report when you get the car. I think it's worth the risk at $27k. Can't wait to see it someday. How about a few decent pictures when you get it?

Greg,

It will be interesting to see if you can complete the transaction. I hope you do. I think its got a lot of potential. I was watching it the last minute and was temped to bid up to 30k for it but decided that completing the transaction might be to much of a headache.

Greg,
Hello. I'm Dick's Nephew and would be real interested in what the car is like as well. Like most, a Round Port is out of my league, but I was about to take the plunge, crack the piggy bank, and spend the family fortune. After 2 fruitless calls with miles and 4 unresponsive e-mails, my better half told me I be crazy to drive 2 1/2 days to find out that the car was a clone. I'll probably regret it though (as Dick has already reminded me). Best wishes and I hope it turns out to be a good deal for you!

Greg, I just noticed the '69 Bird you picked up as the ONLY bid right before buying this car. That was a great snag. RAIII, 4spd, Special Paint and low miles. What a snag.

I'd love to have gotten that one.
