Dome light stays on.
Sorting out my 65 GTO. The dome light has never worked. Checked the bulb and it was missing.
Installed new bulb and its on all the time with doors closed. Unscrewed from roof, wires look fine When hanging by wires alone it works as it should. As soon as the screws go back in it comes on and stays on. Thanks for your help in advance. |

Make sure wire is not hitting roof or that the screw is not in the wire. The wire from the bulb is grounded by the door switches and the headlight switch. Something else is doing it. If the light works correctly when unscrewed from the roof some part of it must be hitting the metal roof.

I can push the fixture hard against the roof and move it around, works as it should.
Only stays on when screws are in it. |

Chasing two problems here.
Light stays on only with screws installed. That is because the screws are earthing the light frame, reqd to complete the electrical cct. Light on with doors closed. Could be h/light sw knob rotated all the way CW, switching on the lamp. If not this, likely to be the door switch. This happened on my GTO. I glued a small 1/16" thick piece of alum to the door to push the sw plunger in a little further. |

He's got something touching making ground when he puts the screws in. Needs to give wires and fixture a good inspect to see what's making contact when it ain't suppose to. Melted/broke insulator, bare wire on top, screw through or pinching wire...Just something making contact when he tightens it up. Clay |

Update.
After trying this and that, it seems the fault is in the fixture.
I insulated the shafts and heads of the mounting screws. Light now works as it should. The fixture is a new one from our host. ??????? |

This may sound stupid...but check your fuses...sometimes when your brake light fuse blows your dome light will glow.
