PS
- i don't own any John Deere equipment or have any stock in the company.
The boots have just been beyond all expectations, so shared the experience with you guys in case any of you are as frugal and demanding as i am.

Not often that you get more than what you paid for.

Ordering a new pair of 8285 TODAY - before you guys buy them all out.
To hell with waiting until Monday

Thank You, to Preston - for bumping his old boot thread.
It got me in gear just in time to get another pair of JD's, at a great price.

Pulled trigger on these today.
Practically identical to my old 8283's - mainly just a different color.

How do the John Deere boots run size wise? I wear a 9.5 wide in street shoes and a 10 wide in sneakers. I tried different styles ofTimberl and boots and needed different sizes in the differentstyles, anywhere from a 9.5 wide to a 10.5 wide. And, some styles didn't fit right no matter the size!

Yes, exact same Boot as the eBay link i posted.
eBay seller has size 11 for $106.99 free shipping.
You have to clear the size/width drop boxes back to "select" and start over with your sizing. 10w was my selection.

I read some of the Q&A on the Amazon listing.
They are waterproof.
The interior is made like a Mercedes-Benz
Exterior leather is supple and they feel 95% broken-in , right out of the box

We must have about the exact same feet as one another.
I always get Wide whenever possible.
9.5 - 10 is my range in most shoes/boots typically.
10W i can wear 2 pairs of socks in winter with no problem at all.

They run pretty true to standards in sizing.

Here are some compare pics of the 2 pairs of JD's i bought in March 2009.

Important to disclose - i do remove strings from my boots and clean boots with plain water and a rag every month. Soak the strings.
Let dry out overnight - then liberal application of mink oil - even on the strings.
Almost religiously / monthly

These #6504 - 6" - were more like tennis shoes.
Boots like this with glued/vulcanized soles i usually got maybe 1 or sometimes 1.5 years Spring/Summer use before they were total trash .
These did go 3 years Spring/Summer, and were light as a feather.
Still have the original 2-tone Black/Tan strings in them.
The soles cracked in half at the "ball of foot" area - which is always my problem with every boot with all the squatting/bending/kneeling i do.
The leather portion held up incredibly though.
Still use them once in a while for Indian/Espionage type maneuvers. (moccasins)
They were good for what they were - but i think i actually paid a few dollars more for these than i did for what turned out to be the best boots in the world.

So i never bought another pair like this.

The big boots #8283 - 8" - i think they were made from a magic potion.

10.5 years ?
7.5 of those years, have been year-round use.
The first 4-5 years after monthly clean-up/mink oil treatment - they would bounce back and look almost new again. Deep Dark Cherry color leather.
Boots like this i normally got 2 or maybe 3 years use before they cracked in half.
And they looked like hell and felt like hell by then.
And $200-$300 pair

These JD's are still comfortable,
and will look fairly decent again after mink oil next week.
Still have the original 2-tone Black/Green strings in them.
Cannot believe the soles still have not cracked in half at ball of foot after all this time.
I don't cut them any slack other than monthly cleaning/mink oil.
Whatever i'm doing - they are doing too.
Sometimes might wipe them off with a wet rag as needed.

I have not had any "comebacks" of previous foot/ankle/back pains-problems since owning these boots.
Biggest reason i have loved them so much.
Plus they weren't $300 pair.
And - they just won't quit.
Might have them Bronzed like they did my baby shoes .

I'm only about 5'8" and 140lbs - so others results will vary most likely.
But anybody will get way more than $107 worth out of these JD Boots.
And be comfortable in them.

I'm not sure if the soles are going to be as good on these new boots , as my old ones.
My old ones were made for cow manure and fertilizer environments.

The seller is listed in NC
I am in NC
But it listed a 10 day expected delivery date ? lol
Wednesday the 11th ETA

Will give a report as soon as they arrive.
Actual ETA may shorten in reality , unless they are on a vacation.

Foot - Ankle - Back pain/suffering became a huge reality for me before age 25.
I had to quit working on cars for a living (and working on concrete floors) to heal and recover. It got down to where surgeries were the only other options left.
Or get off those floors.
And that worked for me - in less than a year.
At 25 - i felt 70 at end of day - felt 85 every morning getting out of bed.
Enough was Enough

Learned a lot from that .
Was able to re-enter automotive field eventually, better prepared.

Even a cheap ass bastard needs to pay attention to his footwear and environment.
Don't settle for boots/shoes that don't feel like second nature right out of the box.
"Maybe they'll break-in and be Okay in a couple/few weeks" - hell no they won't.
They'll make an old man out of you.

I have been through a lot of brands over the years. I am on the concrete about ten hours a day on average more when traveling. For me I am kneeling down a lot and seem to separate the side of the sole or wear holes in the leather where the crease is. I’m currently wearing some Keen boots that are very comfortable and are just now getting a hole in the leather. Soles look great though. They are about a year old now. Unfortunately they will have to be replaced soon because of working with molten aluminum.

Got the new pair of John Deere #8285 Boots today.
The same ones i posted the eBay link to.

Not keeping them - sending them back.
Out-of-the-box comfort just isn't there like it should be.

These are Dan Post/JD ,,, but a semi lesser version , like a version #2 revamp.
Still made well enough overall - but just not the same full-blown quality as before.

Biggest issue to me is the inboard ankle area is fubbarred.
The mid-point anchor eyelet is moved too far back , and too high.
It sits right on top of my inner ankle bone.
It's all i can feel - like the main point of contact - will never work out for me.
The actual pair are even further back to the stitching than these pictured.

This may even be a defective assembly set. idunno
But i'll eat the return shipping and move on.

The True original version JD's all have the JD Logo embossed on the outer heel of each boot.
I noticed this from the start - but bringing it up as a key point going forward.
If you find any of those with logo heels - i would highly recommend them.

Just had a pair of Keens delaminate. Every glue joint on them gave out at once. They were comfortable and lasted a long time but after shopping, I bought Danner. So far, I like them better and there are less glued joints to fail.

A lot of people here also swear by Twisted X.

Bought these while waiting for Wolverine's to ship. Have since purchased 2 move pairs. I had plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis for at least 3 years on and off. Have not had any problems since using these cheap boots. Auto tech 30+ years on concrete. Have yet to use the Wolverine's yet.

Learned something about boot reliability!

My wife and I were hiking earlier this week and her boot sole literally fell half off. We were surprised because it was an expensive Lowa hiking boot. They were about 12 years old but not even close to worn out.

Reminded me of the Keene's I mentioned in this thread that the soles just fell off. They were about 10 years old. I thought it was because an adhesive joint let go.

Checking on the Lowa web site, I found this:
"* Hydrolysis - Boot sole separation

Sole Units will degrade when your footwear is used only occasionally and is stored for long periods of time. This is not a warrantable issue. Sole units degrade faster than if the footwear is worn regularly. Hydrolysis is a normal material aging process that occurs in all footwear with a cushioned PU midsole independent of the manufacturer. The process also occurs in automobile, tires, ski boots or helmets and does not represent lower quality or even a quality issue in materials or workmanship.

There are two types of sole injection technology popular with outdoor boots: EVA and PU. LOWA uses PU Injected Technology, to extend the life of their boots.

PU vs. EVA
We use PU on our midsoles. It's a terrific shock absorber, rebounds well, will last longer on the trail and offers better comfort. You will get two to five times the performance life compared to molded EVA midsoles.

When a PU midsole begins to deteriorate, you'll see small cracks along the injection area, above the sole unit. This is an indication that your boots are wearing out."
Web search indicates this is pretty common in footware.

Note to self.....
