My first car was a 69 Cutlass S, it moved far better than a 350 moving 3,500 pounds should...

My buddy's 70 SX 455 ragtop is your color.

I bet you would have to have the two next to each other to see a difference...

Well, the FAST/Factory Stock race at US131 in Martin, MI didn't exactly go as planned. Two passes down the track and nowhere close to a clean run. Not running right over 5K rpm. I thought I fouled plugs, but nope. Checked several things, replaced cap and rotor and it ran better. But when I made a pass she wouldn't rev over 5K (and they are brand new valve springs so I know that's not it). So all things seem to be pointing to the M&H points conversion. I plan on swapping that in the new few days as I prep the car for Maryland International Raceway (MIR). However, the weather doesn't appear to be looking too good at this point, so we'll see.

The good news, the car still launches real good. I just wasn't able to see how the M-20 I swapped in for the M-21 performed.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out as planned and hope you get to the root of the problem before MIR.

Well, I'm not sure the car is fixed. Buddy who I was going with, he's have tow vehicle issues. The iffy weather Sat and some other things, we've decided to cancel and shoot for next year.

overdue for an update.

Let see, M&H was not the issue. I had a few plug wires which ohm'd all over the place so a new set of wires was installed. The main root of the problem was a coil going out. So after fixing things, I figured I finally had the car figured out for the 2020 Pure Stock Drags. Well needless to say, there was still an issue as the car was off a full second even though she rev'd to 6K with no problems anymore. I also had some shifter linkage issues as the shifter would get stuck in 2nd and 3rd on occassion. So, back under the car for more troubleshooting. I fixed the linkage as it was off slightly. Then I found the next problem. Pypes Race Pro mufflers rusted out internally and the fiberglass clogged the outlet. There was my flow problem and missing 100hp which was costing me a full second.

Martin FAST/FS race in the fall last year (2020) she was back to 12.80s at 109/110mph. So we are finally making some progress in the right direction.

This year brought an unexpected rear end rebuild. I had to give back the loaner 4 pinion STT and GM 4.33 gears, so in went a new Eaton and Fabcraft 4.33s. I also replaced a leaking rear axle seal.

After 5 years, my hard work finally paid off. Martin FAST/FS Spring Nationals last week, right off the trailer I was rewarded with a 12.50 @ 111.36 with a 1.87 60 ft!!! I'm ecstatic!!!! I had a couple 12.60s a couple 12.62s and some 12.70s. Car was pretty consistent, lots of 1.95 and 1.96 60 ft slips. I ended up paired against a 71 GTO 455HO car and was victorious, so I'm 1 for 2 vs 71 GTO 455HO cars.

I'm curious, how were you able to discern that the coil was the culprit - trial and error?

process of elimination basically. As I have several cars, I had a good coil sitting here, so swapped it in. Once I realized that was the issue I ordered a brand new Accel Super Stock coil and painted it black after it arrived. it's yellow from the factory.

thanks for the reply.
I had something similar;
mine was a newly purchased MSD coil;
The tip off I had was it ran poorly when I put it on, so that was cut and dried.

I was hoping that there was a way to diagnose a coil, as I have three vintage Delco coils that I'd like to check... but a very disassembled car at the moment
