Dual exhaust with different mufflers
So I really need to quiet down the exhaust. If I put a quiet (ie restrictive) muffler on one bank will it cause uneven combustion on that side even though I have a balance tube? Any serious consequences doing that?

I don't know the answer to your question about a more restrictive muffler one side causing any serious consequences.
But a quieter muffler does not necessarily mean it's more restrictive. The Dynomax Super Turbos will be quieter than your VT's and will have very little (if any) difference in the flow. |

I made some threads where I have tested exhaust changes with a chassis dyno and a wideband. Going from a more restrictive muffler/pipe to a better flowing system resulted in more power AND a noticeable leaning out of the AFR. After adjusting the carb, the power increased a bit more.
Even with a balance pipe, each side of the engine will be primarily affected by the muffler on it's side. With two different mufflers, the jetting requirements will likely be different for each side of the engine. This situation would work better with a quality X-pipe, but I still would not do it. As Champ said, there are some really good flowing mufflers that are not all that loud.

Yeah that was my thought as well. The balance tube wont balance the exhaust stream 100 %. The side with the more restrictive muffler will have a different "tune" than the other.

Why would you put a different muffler on one side and not the other?

Yeah...good question. I was trying to find a sweet spot by not being too loud while not affecting performance. And didn't want to get into the roulette game and trying all these different pairs of mufflers.

As I posted earlier, a solid choice in a quieter, low restriction muffler is the Dynomax Super Turbo.

I was VERY pleased with noise reduction after switching to the Dynomax ST 17749.
