Default 1980 tach

I just bought a 1980 trans am . all the gauges work except tach. tach wires seem to be hooked up. is there something else I should look for or start looking for a new tach.

If the wiring checks out, the most likely culprit is the tach.

The 1980 and 1981 Trans Ams used a different circuit board that prior year 1970s Trans Ams did.

The tachometer board goes bad over time which is not something that can be repaired.

The cure is to replace the circuit board. The meter movement (the part that the white pointer is attached to & that moves the pointer) may also have gone bad from age & use but most often, on those tachs it's the board.
