Default A record eBay asking price for base early 2nd gen?

Other than what gets posted here, I don’t pay attention to 2nd gen prices, mine’s still not finished and I never plan to sell. Next purchase, if ever, is a 1st gen. sometimes an eBay listing is put in front of me- for a 1971 Firebird at $34,999 subtitled “ 1971 Pontiac Firebird *MINT CONDITION *A/C & POWER BRAKES *MATCHING NUMBERS”. I always like examples of what my car should be, so that I make an informed decision to deviate, so I clicked.

The dealer’s site

Imagine my disappointment, not even Sharktank worthy.
“Mint” and “restored” should have tipped me off to future disappointment.

Insanity rules for eBay ask prices (I know it’s cheap way to advertise with an insane asking price...look at me I’m spreading the word).

Omg! A formula for no way in heck $182000

Just nuts

Clearly I need to pay more attention to prices, as several more asks were surprising.
Maybe I need to finish my 71 Esprit restification and cash in.

Later

But Ken, that '71's got a MATCHING #'S 350 engine with MATCHING #'S automatic transmission! How could you let it get away?

Well, maybe I won't take it in the shorts too bad if I sell my 72 Esprit. 49K miles, 455HO, T400, etc. I may move extremely rural and it may not fit that lifestyle. I might lose 5 or 10K but not crazy loss.

What I am seeing here is any nice vintage car that is desirable and in nice shape, correct or not, will go 25K min. Meaning the "regular" ones, not the rare musclecar versions.

Hey it's a rare "big block" car.

I wouldn't put much stock into it, you could go to pretty much any category on eBay and find things that are way overpriced. It doesn't mean it's actually going to sell for that amount.

This is very true, sometimes the seller doesn't even want to sell it. I sold a Camaro street strip car to a guy several years ago. His family hounded him to get rid of it so finally he listed it on Craigs list for a very high price not wanting anyone to buy it. Meanwhile he kept telling the family he listed it for sale "Go look on Craigs list!" and they stopped bothering him.

The record setting asking price for the Formula 455HO - that same car was for sale for a long time on eBay about 10 years ago in Illinois. Came down to $54,000 that I saw before it sold to someone in Georgia. Looks like not a lot done to it since then other than a $130,000 (roughly) increase in price.

Here's the 2010 thread where I posted pics of this car. It's a rare one and a decent car but that price seems a bit on the steep side.

If you've been watching prices at the recent Mecum in Florida this past week, and selling at those prices, you'd be in even more shock. Especially since we are supposed to be in this recession, high unemployment, classic car prices have been down, yada yada. I guess it's all that stimulus money they've been passing out, lol.

Usually right after an auction like this it brings out the fleabay ads and dealers with higher prices.

I'm sure prices have been going up - I haven't been paying much attention. Just brought my truck home from the paint shop. 1966 F250 Deluxe Camper Special Ranger with automatic, factory 1966 Mustang parchment bucket seats, factory console from a 1965 Falcon with buckets, custom color code. Truck is one of one. Paid $1,825 for it. Got two engines, extra wheels and original unused rear bumper with Dealership advert still in the license plate frame.

Recreated the advert using photoshop. Notice how every "R" letter is different than the other just like the original. Custom fonts.

A labor of love that I'll likely never get my money out of. Just thought I'd share. I might use this as my tow vehicle for my 71 TA....
