Default Valve adjustment on a roller cam 455

This has probably been beat to death here. I'm not a pro here maybe one step above novice but no dummy. My main question is what difference does it make if the cam is exactly on the base circle? You got 180 degrees to adjust it somewhere in there. Is this just because of the old manuals? I guess maybe because you cant see the lifter? With the push rod cover off I bring up #1 and adjust both valves, rotate 90 then do 8 and so on in the firing order. I move the pushrod up and down until there is no play. Then I tighten 1/4 turn, then tighten the allen head, then turn the wrench and allen tool maybe another 1/8 turn. I can't think of when I had an issue. Is this just my way of skinning the cat or have I been doing it wrong? Again, not a pro here...what says the PY?

If the cam is large enough, your method will not give good results. And yes, its been discussed at length.

Intake when exhaust starts to open, exhaust when intake is halfway closed.

Assuming
a standard firing order the most infallible way I have found to do the job with the valley pan on,
albeit not the quickest is as such.

This process follows the firing order.

With both valve covers off and all 8 plugs removed.
Set motor to TDC.
Adjust int 2 and exh 8.
Rotate 90, set int 1 and exh 4.
Rotate 90, set int 8 and exh 3 .
Rotate 90, set int 4 and exh 6.
Rotate 90, set int 3 and exh 5.
Rotate 90, set int 6 and exh 7.
Rotate 90, set int 5 and exh 2.
Rotate 90, set int 7 and exh 1.

Huh. OK. I'll give it a whirl that way. This cam does have the most lift I have ever done. Not that big by any means. .590 on the intake and .620 on the exhaust with 1.65 rockers.

Do all your valve adjustments with valley pan off so you can see where the cam is. This is a simple way to avoid any problems.

The best way to really adjust a hydro lifter cam is with the motor running , but this can be messy PIA with roller rockers!

The other great thing about doing it this way is that if you can not get the valve train noise free like this, then you for sure have a problem to pin down!

Man there is 100 ways to do this. I forgot that there was directions in the PETE McCarthy book. So I did it this way.
