It looks like the Parts Place has finally gotten their '65 taillight bezels done... They're available for $300/pair but note that they're plated ABS plastic--Not the original pot metal. After searching the globe for NOS and/or usable cores and paying a fortune to have cores restored and replated, I think I'll take mine off and put the repops on my car! The originals are so darn fragile. http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/newp....asp?curpage=3 Now, Anyone know where I can get a good Tail panel trim piece?

I thought the Parts Place was also making these now. Saw one of their prototypes last Spring at the BOP swap meet in Wheaton(?). Thought it was going to be around $500.

$300 sounds awful steep price for a set of plastic replacements. I looked long and hard for a nice set when I was restoring my '65 and found a very decent pair for $100. The same guy had a set of almost NOS grilles, lenses, and housings for $400.

My tail light bezels and tail piece were all in bad shape. The bezels are fragile, and they needed some soldering. Space coast plating in Melboune Fl repaired them and rechromed all 3 pieces for $500.00. They did an excellent job.

HiPoGTO,
If you think the originals are fragile, how long do you think the plastic repos will last? I think I will get mine redone as sone as I can afford it.

The point is that the plastic repops are replacable... The cast parts are not--At least without great expense and difficulty. Not to mention that the NOS bezels I have are appreciating faster than nearly any investment you can make. Better just to keep them in the box.

Did your cores have pits in them, and were they filled in? No one does these around me.

Yes & yes.

The tail piece, both tail light bezels and front and rear bumpers were all done by Space Coast Plating. All came out great.

Good luck,
Rob

I just got a pair of the reproductions in my hands, and they are as nice as you could hope for.

Andre, can you easily tell they are plastic, or do they look stock?

I wonder how the reproductions will be judged at shows? Would you lose points for plastic replacements? Probably not as many as pitted/cracked originals, but I am still curious.

I was over to Sonic Motors the other day and I had the choices right in front of me for the taillight bezels. Either redone originals or the new plastic ones. All I had to do was see the plastic ones to decide I needed original. The repros are so light and all plastic. What concerns me is the chrome paint flaking off, plus just tapping them with your fingernail its all plastic, even the chrome. One of the best parts about classic cars compared to todays vehicles is the fact they were not made out of plastic. If you want a plastic GTO, buy a 2005.

Where is "Sonic Motors" If I'm to understand you, there's a place where you can buy replated GTO parts off the shelf? Please advise

Every time a new reproduction part comes out, there is always be a great division between those who must have stock original parts versus reproduction parts.

In some cases the reproduction parts are just plain crap, other times the difference is minor.

On these bezels, the quality is great. Of course if I were sitting on several sets of expensive originals, I'd probably tell you that they are a POS, but I'm not in that position.

These are made just like the '69 tail light bezels. Once they have been installed, no one has a right to be putting their paws on your car to determine if the part is pot metal or plastic.

I can't vouch for them holding up, but for as much as I take my cars out to shows, one years worth of shows is not even equal to 30 days of weather. The rest of the time the car sits under a cover in a garage.
