Yes, you're allowed to float the pins even if the pistons didn't come that way. Mine are not in this motor. Speed Pro rings. The block is a '69 station wagon block that came in the GTO when I bought it 1984.

Thanks again for the info. ! That should be good news for any low budget guys who might wanna build a Stocker. I assume that the SP/TRW pistons will save about $500, on a 400 or 455 build.

Hey, there are lots of Pontiac guys who talk down to anybody who suggests using those pistons. TRW is the only brand of forged pistons I ever bought/raced. Made lots of passes in our 455 bracket cars. Never had one single problem with a TRW piston.

I understand about the advantages of lighter pistons, in engines where there are no rules against 'em.

That brings up another question. The Eagle H-beam rods are legal. They weigh only 760gr. So, would the TRW piston/Eagle H-beam combo be to light to pass NHRA tech ?

I see that there is a minimum piston/pin/rings/rod assembly weight. So I assume that a TRW piston/pin with a 760gr rod + SP rings will be over that minimum.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...5&MAKE=Pontiac

Piston-Rod Specs----Piston Weight-----Comp Height----Pin Weight------Rings----------Rings Weight----Rod C/C--Max Rod C/C---Rod Weight----Min Assy Weight
--------------------------------551g---------------- 1.695"------------- 90g-------5/64, 5/64, 3/16---------57g------------6.625"-------6.650"------------760g---------------1458g

Also see that the Comp Height is listed at 1.695. I think the SP L2262F pistons have a 1.714 height. Since those pistons are on the accepted list, I assume that the pin height can vary.

I had heard through the grapevine that that car was one of Rock’s old cars, but I have no way to substantiate that.. seems unlikely, but would be very cool if it was.

I have a copy of John Schoe's RAIV cam 274/274 @ 0.050. My TRWs did not have enough V-P for me to try it! John said he used offset dowels to get the valve right in the piston pocket. And back then used cast rods!

Rock ?

Rock Running is the only Rock I can remember who was a Pontiac Stock racer. This article says that he raced several Pontiacs, including a '71 Lemans with a 455HO. That's the only one of his cars I remember.

http://www.mmshof.org/inductees/rock-running/

I haven't found a pic of it, but I did find this one.

http://www.tarheeltigers.org/1971-t-...class-car.html

And this one, which was run in SS. This article says that Dan Jensen is "Mr.T-37". So, he can probably name & produce pics of lots of former T-37 drag cars. Anybody know how to contact him ?

I had his email at one time because I discussed my old T-37 with him. I will try to dig it up. It’s been 4 or 5 years ago.

Fantastic pictures! Brings back so many memories. There were several competitive Pontiac stockers at Union Grove in the mid-late '60's. Ray Bisig with Arnie Beswick's '63 Super Duty, Iggy's on Higgins with his '64 Black GTO {Beat me every time I ran against him), Rick Russo with his '62 Catalina stocker, Ralph Tatum with his '64 GTO, and, quite often, Arnie Beswick.

Default National Records

For this & the SS thread, I'd like to come up with a list of every Pontiac powered car/driver that set a nat record.

I know of a few. But, I suppose you'd need access to the old NHRA National Dragster newspapers to come up with all, or at least most of the record holders. At least I think I remember that the records were posted occasionally in ND.

So, do any of you guys have, or know who has lots of the old ND newspapers ?

Any & all Pontiac record holder info would be welcomed & appreciated in this thread !

I'll start it off with the Truman Fields '68 RA2 Bird. He won the '73 US Nats, and set a new C/S record in the finals, with a 12.06. But, I'm quite sure there were lots of Pontiac record holders, before 1973, especially back in the 421 SD days, and the early GTO years.

In lookin for past nat record holders, I ran across this little GTO that held a nat record for 5 years straight !

http://www.2040-cars.com/Pontiac/GTO...holder-185350/

I suppose this car & Bill Rink's '74 GTO are the reason for the high hp factor, on the '74 200hp 350 engine. The '77 350 has a much lower factor. Even the low compression '77 400 engines have a lower hp factor than the '74 350, in all bodies except Birds.

John Schloe has a 71 formula, it was power by a 455, 66 heads, trw pistons, stock rods, it had a .420" lift comp cams, it run really low 11's. Then he switch to SS with a 400, in his car. Real nice guy.

Not the most appealing nose on that bird. But that appears to be a great way to get into Stock Eliminator.

The '77-'78 nose is my favorite of all the 2nd gens.

And, I also like the Formy hood, rather than a T/A shaker hood + all the wheel flairs & front spoiler.

Looking for sources for NHRA Stock Elminator national records, national event winners, & class winners from the years before 1998. 1998 & newer are listed in the Drag Race Central archives.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/Seri...es=NHRA-SUMMIT

So, anybody here know of any source for the older Stocker records ?

It has long been considered a good accomplishment to win your class at the US Nationals, if there is more than 1 car in your class. For those who might be interested, but don't wanna take time to look 'em all up, here is a list of some class winners, & links to that info. The oldest records I see posted on Drag Race Central are from 1998. If anybody knows how I can find more records, online, please post that info.

In 1998, Bob Michael was M/SA class winner at Indy, in a '78 T/A.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1998#indextop

In 2000, Pontiac power won K/SA, L/SA, & N/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2000#indextop

In 2002: Scott Burton won F/SA in a '72 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop

In 2003: Looks like Pontiac power took F/SA, J/SA, N/SA, & P/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop

2004: Bryan Phillips took E/SA in his '67 400 Bird. Bob Mulry took K/SA in a '74 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop

2005: Bill Rink won J/SA, with his '74 GTO. Pontiacs also picked up N/SA, O/SA, & P/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop

2008: Todd Hoven won G/SA over a large field, in his GTO. Ryan Warter won K/SA in a '77 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop

2009: Mike McGinley won O/SA, in a '74 GA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop

2011: Mike Morgan won K/SA, with his '76 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2011#indextop

2012: Bryan Phillips won D/SA with his '67 400 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop

2013: We picked up D/SA, F/SA, G/SA, & N/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2013#indextop

2014: Mike Morgan won K/SA, again.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2014#indextop

2015: Michael Brand won G/SA, with his '73 Bird. In lots of these years Pontiacs also picked up some RU positions, in class. When there are several cars in that class, an RU at Indy is sort of a big deal.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2015#indextop

2016: Michael Brand picked up F/SA this time.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop

Had several RU's in 2017 & 2019.
