Tire size/clearance question
On my all stock 67 GTO (Air shocks), do you think I would have clearance issues with AR 16" rims (checking on backspacing now) with 265/60/16 tires? I am not wanting to add a lot of height in back with the shocks. Ideally as close to level as possible. I appreciate any help/experience you can pass along.

Are you sure you meant 265/60/16?...tire rack doesn't even list a tire in that size.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, although they are not BRAND new but near "0" miles of a mid 2000s manufacture date. I know they are no longer available that size but since that deal is tires and wheels I thought I would run them out if they would clear and replace them with an available size at that time. My main interest is the wheels obviously. In a pinch I could sell the tires I suppose and start with new 16's of an available size.

Probably not what you want to hear- but I wouldn’t run 20 year old tires if I was going to drive at highway speeds or higher.
My 65 Grand Prix still has the tires I put on it in high school in 1994! Tread still looks great (dad scared the crap out of me about doing burnouts). I will still drive it around the neighborhood- but rarely over 40 mph. If the car is going to be used at relatively lower speeds I don’t see a problem with it. |

A 265/60/16 tire converts to about 28.5"s tall with a tread width of about 10.5"s if my math is correct. Wasn't stock height around 26.5"s? And tread width was around 6 or 7"s? So wouldn't the taller tire raise the rear or are you putting them on the front as well? I am running 235/50/17s on all four corners of my 67 and they are 26.25"s tall. Year One Rally2s 17x8 with 4. 5" back spacing or zero offset.

Could you get them on without lifting the car with your airshocks (which I would suggest getting rid of anyway)? Maybe IF the BS is PERFECT for that width tire on the rear. But the front???? That's just not happening.
As already pointed out, the tires are worthless based on their age. Anything beyond 7 years old is questionable and from your own info they are at or near double that. I wouldn't personally invest in 16" rims at this point because the tire sizes available today in 16's is extremely limited. I used to run 16's on my wife's Camaro from 2000 - 2017. But every 6 or 7 years when I went to buy tires the tire selection got worse. In 2017 we went to 17's on both the GTO (which had 15's) and the Camaro for a vastly improved size selection. |

+1 for all of the above, especially not using tires that were made in the mid-00s. That's a safety issue.

I remember when the front tire came apart on my 71 GTO- very lucky I was in a parking lot and there was no body damage
