Mystery Mercury V-8. Can you really bore .300 over? Help!
Ready to take the engine from my ‘62 Mercury into the machine shop. This was my grandfathers car since new, and I got it after he passed away in the early 80’s. He had the original engine rebuilt in 1980 or so. It came with a 221 cu in V-8.
Sooooo, while inspecting the engine after tear down I found very little wear in the cylinders, no ridge, and about.002 taper at worst. Great! I then mic’ed them out and found them to be around 3.828-3.830. Ok, this would jibe with a 260 bored .020 over and some wear. The bore for a 221 is 3.50. OK, so I figured I remember the story wrong and gramps must have rebuilt a junkyard 260 or something. Now I was loading the engine into the truck today to drop off at the machine shop tomorrow. Figured I’d check the engine casting codes just to see what I have here and it ID’s as a ‘62 221! What the heck. I double checked a few cylinders and they ARE 3.828 ish. I’m no expert, but I see no evidence of it being sleeved. Who would sleeve a lowly 221 in a Meteor anyway? I wouldn’t think you could bore more than.060” or so, not .330”. I’ll attach a few pics here.

Ford likely used 260 castings for a few 221s.
Many FEs were done that way; if you bought a FE service replacement block in the 70s they all had the same casting numbers were all the same if you bought a pickup 360 or a 428. Also marine blocks had much thicker walls with some makes.

A quick search came up with a few forum discussions, including this one: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...9864&showall=1
I'd say it's a 260 that's been bored once. If you can find the date code for the block, that might be helpful. It should be on the driver's side front of the deck, where the head would not obscure it.

Thanks guys.
I’ll look over that thread you posted. Was just going to post this. Out of my “How to rebuild a smallblock Ford engine “ book. Which says 221 also. BUT-The service replacement idea sounds like a possibility!

I’ve had time to sit down and read a lot of threads. Even though the C20E shows it as a 221 only. The J at the end in my 1st pic id’s it as a 260. It would be G if a 221! My head hurts.
Anyway it’s definitely bored out to a overbored 260. Just wanted to positively ID it so I can get the correct rebuild parts. Thanks!
