New motor 1st oil change
I know opinions vary but thought i'd ask. How many miles/time would you run a rebuilt 455 before you changed oil for 1st time ? I use Valvoline VR1. 10-30 wt.

I change mine pretty quick..50 miles or so sometimes less.

Based on your recent thread with start up issues, I assume the excessive cranking dumped lots of raw fuel into the oil. I would bite the bullet and change it now.

Given an engine that runs properly from the beginning; some thick moly-based paste on the cam lobes, and a BYPASS OIL FILTER, I'd change the full-flow filter at 20 minutes, not more than 1/2 hour run time. I'd change the bypass filter whenever it stopped getting hot (i.e., no flow because it's plugged); and beyond that, the engine oil itself wouldn't need to be changed for thousands of miles because the bypass filter is getting evil wear and dirt particles OUT of the oil. If there's no thick moly-paste as an assembly lube, the full-flow filter is probably good for 500+ miles.
Far as I'm concerned, a person is nuts to not install a bypass filter on a fresh engine; at least for the first ~500 miles if not "permanently". Amsoil sells them brand-new; there's a couple of Frantz options brand-new, but I buy used Frantz (SKY, Stockton CA) filters from eBay. |

I change the brake-in oil and filter right after the 20 min break-in. Then after 500 miles and then normal intervals whether it is regular oil or full syn.
