What is this valve you speak of?

I need to get a replacement pump for a 65 and have not read anything about reusing a valve.

It is the pressure regulator valve. It controls the outlet pressure of the pump, and is actually integrated as part of the outlet fitting.

I've heard that later model boxes (Jeep, 2nd gen, etc.) need some extra pressure to perform ideally. Maybe that would be a reason to reuse the pressure valve from an ideally operating system. You could possibly avoid some of the rebuild roulette.

Yeah, it's not just psi, it's flow volume too. One problem is that not all valves are compatible with all pumps. I think Schurkey has posted the valve types/differences, as I recall there's 6 types.

Wish someone made a simple bracket to use a type II in place of a type I pump.

I am getting the complete pump and reservoir, would the valve be included in this case?

I have a 65 block in a 64 LeMans, the 64 pump will not work with the 65 power steering bracket.

I was hoping this would be a plug and play replacement.

its in the big nut on the bottom of the pump that the pressure hose connects to, it has a orifice in it that regulates the fluid. most reman pumps dont come with it & require you to re use the one from the original pump.

Thanks, I understand now.

Now I just hope the valve from the 64 pump will fit/work with the 65 pump.

Reviving this thread because I was doing this today. The pulley on my 81 TA was slightly bent so I had another perfect pulley on another pump. I removed the pump from the car and both pulleys. I went to put on the good pulley and of course the threads in the middle of the shaft are stripped. Any suggestions?

By 1981, you may have the metric pump. It's possible the threads in the shaft are metric. If they are not too badly damaged, you may be able to re-tap them and then use a proper bolt to push the pulley on. Need to determine what the threads are first.

Or switch to a earlier pump.

What bolt goes into the snout of the water pump?

The engine is from a 77 trans am. My gut is telling me it is not the original pump. I'll have to clean the threads up a bit and see what I can do. Highway you mean the bolt on the PS pump? You guys think the reservior would crush in a bottle jack press if I can position it nicely?

I rebuilt my OEM pump with a kit ... seemed pretty straight forward. Surprised more people don't do that.
