So many posts, this is confusing. Are the posts confirming the approximate cost to recast D & D Automobila is %400 or the greater than $2000 being posted by other members?
Please confirm, thanks. |

I think what needs to be clarified is what the price is for a clear wheel and what for the solid colors. The clears are the stupid expensive ones.Tom

I googled it just the way David spelled it and came up with steeringwheelbob.com.
Maybe that’s what he meant. |

D&D Automobilia Recast Information
I spoke to Dave the owner this morning about his steering wheel recasting. He seems to be a really knowledgeable nice guy. He spent 20 minutes explaining a lot of the aspects of wheel recasting.
He has steering wheel molds for most cars built between the 1930's through the late 60's. He does have molds for 1963 Tempest and the 1968 Firebird & LeMans. His process is to remove all of the original plastic from the wheel. He takes a non sun damaged inner core portion and smooths / polishes it so he can get the color for the new resin dialed in. Next, he bead blasts and powder coats the steel portion of the wheel. This is then placed in the mold and the resin cast. The remaining work is to sand with progressive finer grits of sand paper and eventually buff and polish until glass smooth. He is a single owner / operator so he's really busy with an approximate 6 month waiting list. He offers potential customers an option to send in a $400 refundable deposit to hold your name on the waiting list. At the appropriate time he would contact you and ask to have the wheel sent in. The turn around time is approximately one to two months. The cost estimate to recast / complete either the 63 LeMans wheel or the 68 Firebird / LeMans single color wheels were $1800 each. |

There are actually some decent videos on the process. Having more time than money ... I might have to give it a try on my 68 wheel ... I have a spare to play with. The casting materials are fairly standard stuff ... biggest problem I would foresee is the dyeing, would be real easy to get that wrong.
Actually ... I bet it would be a real pain to get all the original plastic off a 68 core. |

Looks like steering wheel bob does not recast them. He fills the cracks and paints them.

I have a 68 deluxe that the guy I bought the car off of had done. Spent 10 years never out of box. Cracked to he'll and back. He was shocked. Spent over 1000.00 dollars on it.

Propane torch will soften/melt it nicely. And '64, is that text-to-talk? Take a breath man!
