Wish I had them both!! I'm 84.

Bought my 68, hardtop, auto, AC, PS, PB GTO in 1976 for $1100 with 93,000 miles. Everything worked, no damage, paint was pretty tired. Drove it for about four years, put on about 30,000 miles before I took it apart for a quick restoration around 1980 .... should be back on the road for the first time this fall So much for "quick".

Bought my first Firebird in the early 80s. Was still in high school. A lady who had just gotten divorced moved into our little country town. We had just gotten our first fast food restaurant (Sonic) so we all hung around there. She came in one night in the Firebird.
When she went to leave, it wouldn’t crank, so I went over and helped her. Got it running for her and mentioned that I like the car. Saw her pass a few days later, and she turned around and ran me down. Asked if I would give her $700 for the car, as she wanted something more dependable.
Told her I would have her the cash that afternoon.

Later that day, I was the owner of a 69 Firebird 400, Brown with cream colored (may originally been white) vinyl top, with factory AC. Won a fair amount of money with that car.

Sold it a few years later to buy a 79 factory 400/4spd car that had tops, 3.23 posi, 4wheel disc etc from the original owner.

Wish I had either, or both now

1969 Chevelle SS 396/375 with turbo 400. $1700 in 1974. It had 24,000 original mi. Still have it.

Wind ... did that 396 hold together over the years ... jeez back in the day people grenaded those things constantly.

It never gave me any real problems. Yes, it was a solid lifter motor. It ran quite well back in the day. One night a bunch of us were following each other when we came to a long straight away that ran from an intersection. Naturally, we all had to get on our cars. My buddy had a warmed over 440 6 pack road runner with 410's. I knew he was going to stomp it so I went after him. He pulled me for a few yards until the 396 started to "get on the cam". Then I almost ran over him. He was very quiet the rest of the night. LOL The guy behind me had a 351 cleveland torino and faded away so quickly I couldn't see him in my rear view mirror. Great times!

I used to never pay more than $800 for a 2nd gen Firebird.
