I have the original starter out of my '72 LeMans Sport Vert that I would like to have reconditioned. Any suggestions as to where I should send it?

Wow! My one owner survivor '72 GTO has an original starter that was built on the same day. It has a part # 1108495 and date code 2B22 1. Presently the starter is in my attic and a Delco Rebuilt is in the car. Eventually the original will go back in the car. My car came off the Pontiac, MI. line on March 1st. What day was your car built?

Car was built 04C in Pontiac, MI. It's a 350 cu in. My 72 400 cu in was built 04D in Pontiac, MI. I was considering reconditioning the starter to put in my 400, which has a re-man currently installed. I'm wondering if they're compatible?

The 71 400 & 350 starters are different so I'm assuming that is true for 72 as well. The field coils may have a shunt on one the 400 unit. Solenoids may be different as well, they are on 71's.

1108498 has low torque armature and fields have 1 shunt winding. 1108495 is high torque. It has bigger armature and different field windings. They will physically interchange on the car as a complete unit. You can use the 495 in place of the 498, but I would not recomend using the 498 in place of the 495.
