They secure the wheel housings to the firewall. See yellow circles in photo below.

Thanks! Thought that must be where they attached but I went to a car show last week and those spots in yellow on the few cars I saw were vacant. Many got tossed at some point in time? Only saw one 66 GTO and they were missing too but it was somewhat customized. Do you happen to know if every 66-67 GTO got those brackets? I can't find the brackets from my 67 but I may have misplaced them many years ago. Thanks again for responding and going the extra mile for me!

My 67 Le Mans has them.

To my knowledge, the brackets are standard equipment and came on every '66-67 GTO as well as Tempest & LeMans.

Attached image is a scan from my reproduction 1966 Pontiac Tempest Shop Manual. I think this is the part in question, but if not, I apologize. One on each side, my 66 GTO certainly has them.

I was chasing down a squeak from under the hood of our '67 LeMans, and noticed that these inner fender to firewall brackets were missing. I went through the boxes of parts that came with the car, and there they were. Bolted them in, and the squeak went away.
One thing about them that I discovered: they're not handed. It took me a bit to figure that out, because they are the same shape and I thought initially that I had two of the same side. But one just installs upside-down. |

Thanks everyone! I just ordered a set from Frank's Pontiac and will add their installation to my ever expanding 'to do' list.
