Default Overdrive Trans for 67 Le Mans

I've finally started on my 67 Le Mans. I'm trying to decide what to do about the transmission. The car has a 67 GTO drive train, so I have T400 now, but I'd like to have an overdrive.

I'm thinking of going with a 200R4 and I'm looking at Extreme Automatics
Level 3 (1000hp/750tq).

What' I'm having trouble with is I'm in Southern California and Extreme Automatics is in Ohio.

From what I read on-line they have a pretty good reputation, but if I have a problem that's a long way away.

I last experience with a local I won't name, happened at start-up when the trans was new checking line pressures. I had to pull the trans and take it back for repairs. (something in the valve body they said).

Is there an opinion on buying local? Any recommendations for a trans builder in SoCal?

Thanks for any info.

IIRC Tom S knows a guy in SoCal who does this stuff too.

Search for 'Art Carr California performance transmissions' for 2004R (Huntington Beach, CA)
You should also strongly consider a 4L80E with an aftermarket controller, like a US shift Quick 4. Lots of people can build you a very strong 4L80E. Of course, an adapter plate will be required.
I have no experience with either. But I am probably going to go the 4L80E route.

I found an old article the other day from a Hot Rod magazine that
featured 4L80E being installed in a 67 Chevelle. It didn't seem too difficult, but it's a big trans and took some effort to make it fit.
I also have a mental block when it comes to newfangled electronics.
But it's on the table.

I thought that the 700r4 replaces the TH400 with virtually no modification? The 200r4 replaces the TH 350 or the ST300 with little modification.
Of course you still need the TV cable and lock-up provisions.

T 400 sitting side by side with a 4L80E The 4L80E is about 3 1/2 inches longer they both fit in the same tunnel. Not sure where this rumor comes from that the 4L80E is some monstrous size, it isn't.

They added length to get the OD unit inside of the case, the guts from the T 400, and 4L80E interchange, GM used the same parts that are proven since 1964 in an electronically controlled transmission, with factory OD.

I have 3, 3500 chevy trucks with 4L80E transmissions, 2 are 4X4 duallys, one is a 2 wd 3500 HD box truck. All over 250,000 miles, one just gave up a few months ago at 270,000 miles. Local transmission rebuilder quoted me $800 to rebuild the one with 270,000 miles on it, bench build, I R&R the transmission myself. The other 2 trucks are driving perfectly, that pretty well proves how tough they are in stock form, at least to me.

US Shift has the electronics down to a science, no reason to fear the electronics. You buy the harness with the controller, pretty much plug and play. They are also adjustable from inside of the car, no messing with cable adjustments, governors etc., to fine tune them for your car. Shift points, line pressure, etc. is all done with the controller.

The 200 4r is going to only be built by a select few in the country, probably 10 people all told. The 4L80E can be built by any competent transmission shop, they don't need every hard part replaced with billet parts to be strong. GM engineered them to be strong from day one. 440 lb ft of torque in stock form, with a Trans Go reprogram kit 750 lb ft, same as the old reliable T 400.

Having owned 3 trucks (2 turbo diesels, one 454 BBC) that get worked hard, and survive, cinches the decision for me, YMMV.

Thanks to everyone for their info. especially the picture of the t400 next to a 4L80E.
I spent some time last night looking at U S Shift website and I think it convinced me to go with the 4L80E.
I sent U S Shift an email asking if they can adapt the TPS to a Q-Jet I have.
I don't have to use the Q-Jet but I had this one built by Cliff Ruggles a few years ago and would to see how it works.

Article to retrofit TPS to any popular carb including pre 1980 Q Jets:

My next project will also have a Q Jet, so it is also of interest to me having a kit to use on a Q Jet.

Found this in the link you provided. Looks like a really nice TPS set-up for Q-Jets.
I am still having a little trouble figuring out a trans to BOP adapter for the 4L80E.

You can buy any price you'd like, here's a link to choices:

https://www.google.com/search?q=chev...hrome&ie=UTF-8

I'm not sure if you're aware that the 2 lowest bolts from a chevy pattern are in the same position as BOP pattern, and screw into the block, the upper 4 need to screw into the adapter plate. There's no real magic to the adapter plate connection, or convertor to flex plate.

My 67 Le Mans has a GTO 12 bolt with a 3:73's.
I used to have a 70 Elko that had 3:73's with a 200R4. That was nice to drive on the freeway. If I recall 70 mph was about 2100 rpm.
