So this happened in New York City? These guys have been running wild doing this for years, at least that's what I have heard. Police need to do a better job shutting this stupid crew down.

Pretty much been the same since the 50's. The groups are larger now because they can organize via social media. In the 50's it was the cruisers and the street racers, in the 60's and 70's I saw people bring race cars on freakin trailers to race down Summer Ave. in Memphis. In the 90's through current times it's dirt bikes, sport bikes, quads, car gangs blocking entire interstates to do burnouts, burnout shows, drifting, night racing.
I'm kind of torn when it comes to over the top police response, most of the time it ends up hurting more people, more officers, tearing up more vehicles and property. If left alone, the vast majority of the time they only injure themselves .... that said ... it will only get worse if there is no enforcement or some kind of price to pay for the behavior. If you watch a collection of the YouTube videos you quickly learn that the major reason they do these things is to get chased by the cops, that's what makes it exciting to them. Step one .... I'd make it against the law to post illegal activity on YouTube or other uploading sites. Get rid of their audience and most of them will go away. I can only think back to some of the stuff I did in my GTO in the early 70's, only went to Juvi for it once .... reckless driving ... unfortunately my Dad was a deputy so things didn't go well for me at home. That's why I am a big fan of father/son drag racing etc. Testing your metal at a real race track helps you get your priorities in order and understand the difference between idiot and real racers. |

Baltimore has a big problem with this kinda crap (amongst other things). Its silly to say 'over the top police response'. Without it there would be anarchy. My guess is that none of those riders had registrations, let alone insurance.

What I think is silly is half a dozen cops getting injured, numerous wrecked police vehicles, high speed chases through a city to write what will end up a few traffic tickets. I don't think it will end up total anarchy, kids have been doing this kind of thing forever. Vast majority grow out of it, the rest usually end up in jail.
The major difference is .... WE make them famous by watching their videos, reposting on forums and I'm as guilty as the rest when it comes to that. Pretty sure just about everyone here breaks the law when they take their Pontiacs out for a quick blast in the spring to clear out the cobwebs. We've certainly seen plenty of burnout videos posted. If the police really want to have an impact they need to work their way into the social media circle of these idiots and have a plan in place. Going Smokey and Bandit is never going to stop these guys. |

dataway, I dont completely disagree with you. Yes, things can get out of hand and sometimes they become much bigger problems than they really should be.

This happens in Detroit also. Everyone keeps saying Detroit is cool and hip but my wife refuses to go down there. Just like Chicago and several other cities lots of shootings every weekend. The Detroit police chief is trying and has done a good job but unfortunately people don't like the police until they need them.

Jeez, that Range Rover video is scary .... these kids gotta understand in this day and age most people put in that position are going to think their lives are in danger ... what if you have a wife and daughter in the vehicle. Someone approaches your vehicle while people block you in ... that's life threatening.
One part of me says .... run over as many of them as you need to escape. Another side says soon as you see that kind of cluster F' pull over and let them all blow by and hope someone else runs over them. Probably the big difference when I was a kid was we were never really a d-bag to regular folks, we wanted to find a lonely road and race, show off at the local drive-in joint, cruise the park .... not make enemies of the locals. Wife has got to spend six days in freakin Baltimore on business. I told her ... no staying out after dark, stay in groups, call me every night or I'll be driving down there. |

And many are stolen as ATV theft is huge and they’re now even hitting the dealers.
