Default Chrome plating referal

I need to have my original front and rear bumpers for my 66 GTO rechromed. Anyone have a good plater to recommend? I am in Southern California and have called a couple places. Both were 450 each bumper. My front bumper is perfect and the rear is really nice, except for a small v type wave on the top lip. Damage done off the car over years of being moved around. Very miner.
Thanks in advance.

Vernes is one of the 2 places I called. Have you seen their work? I tried a place in LA about 10 years ago and didn't notice a huge flaw on a 65 Gto front bumper.

Hi Tom,

What's the definition of "not cheap"? I got a quote from a place in Spokane that was ridiculous (over $4k) I was given the name of a place in Tennessee that was supposed to be very good but SoCal might be a closer option for me. I need front and rear done on my 67 GTO.

Thanks-
Ken

Why bother with spending money on the front one? Curious...

I suspect he means it has zero issues, other than the chrome itself?

From my re-chrome adventures, $450 for a front or rear GTO bumper is pretty good. As stated above, you would want to know all the steps they perform for $450.00 (ie dent removal, straighten, nickel, copper, chrome etc). But if you have seen their work and you like it, $450 is a good price in my opinion.

Looks like I'll have to make a trip up to LA to visit Verns. My cheapest quote here from a good shop in San Diego is $850 for a rear 68 bumper.

I went with Verne's. He charged 450 for the rear and 500 for the front. Plus an extra 35 each to sand blast the inside of both bumpers that you don't see. I figured might as well if I'm already in that much. I thought the front bumper was perfectly straight, but it had a couple of little dings. He said 3-4 weeks. I dropped them off 2 weeks ago so I'll post pics when I get them back.

Thumbs up BACK/INSIDE OF BUMPERS

FWIW: The mention of sandblasting the inside of bumpers brought to mind a treatment I did over 26 years ago to my '66 bumpers.

If anyone wants to keep them looking new and drives their car I would suggest POR 15 Silver Coat. I'm sure there are other products that would work as well.

Once I had the bumpers back from the platter I decided I wanted to preserve the backsides and since I was already familiar and using POR products.
I decided to try the Silver Coat. I carefully applied it to the metal being very careful not to let it run through any of the slots/holes in the bumper.

Not knowing how this would workout at the time I took a chance and happy to report the inside of my bumpers are still in great shape.

Cheers.

Driving up to LAX today for the wife. Will be stopping at Verns for a quote and leave the rear bumper there if its good. Figured as long as I'm up there, I continue on to Van Nuys and drop my dash off at Just Dashes.

Lets see, LA, 405 Freeway, Friday, weekend before holiday. Eh... Wouldn't be the first or the last time I spent 8 hours behind the wheel going nowhere

Be sure to bring cash or a check if you are going to leave the bumper. He needs 1/2 as a deposit to start and doesn't take cards.

Just got back from dropping everything off. Ron quoted me $500 for the 68 bumper. BIG he says. Lots of curves, he says. LOL. Three weeks for completion.
He showed me your bumpers all wrapped up and waiting for you. Well, I think they're yours. Had Pontiac on the wrapper.

Traffic was normal for LA on the west side anyway. Crazy series of events happened over by Interstate 5. Metro train hit a stalled motorhome pushing it down the tracks about 5:30 AM. Motorhome caught fire which spread to the train. Freight train coming from the opposite direction on adjacent track hits the burning debris and catches on fire. Main surface street for commuting is closed, all commuter and AMTRAK train traffic to San Diego and Orange County is shut down. People were seen running from the RV moments before the crash and are nowhere to be found. RV burned to the ground as is typical for those rigs.
Luckily no deaths or serious injuries.

And how was YOUR Friday?
