Default 72 build finally getting close to completion

Thought I would share some details on my 72 build.... this is the car as I bought it. $2300 and I drove it home. The plan was to paint it Carousel Red, Formula hood and honeycombs.

After some soul searching I decided to make it a TA clone. I have a soft spot for early second gen TA’s so I decided to paint it red like a 73 (I already have some white and blue cars).

The bodywork started- the only rust was from a vinyl top. The car had been hit from behind so we decided to replace the quarters, tail panel, etc.

As most here probably know a 2bbl carb doesn’t sit in the right spot for a shaker.

I went to my local shop to see if they had a 4bbl intake. They did- attached to a really nice 67 400 with 670 heads that was pulled out of a GTO for a LS conversion.

I bought the motor and my neighbor built a nice turbo 400 for it.

Since the motor was out I decided to clean the frame, then the floors, then it made sense to rebuild the suspension. I don’t know if I have pics- but I went with Pro Touring F Body kit. I bought tubular upper/lowers , subframe connectors, rear leafs, sway bars, pretty much everything they sold.

This is where the project stalls. Work, life, other projects, pretty much anything took priority. I bought the Kore 3 C5 brake kit and a 79 disc rear but I couldn’t get motivated to finish it. I had a friend that needed $$ to finish his 69 so I gave him my car, a bunch of parts and some cash. Unfortunately after about a year there was no progress made. The $$ was gone and the car was still in pieces. There were chips and scratches all over the car.

I finally got fed up and picked up the car and parts. I took it to the shop I usually use locally that I feel like I ca trust.

I knew it was going to cost a lot more to finish it, but at this point I had a lot of shiny expensive parts and nothing to show for it.

Within a couple weeks the local shop had the car running great. A few weeks later the suspension was finished. Then the big brakes, gauges, etc.

This is the car at the shop that got the car running and driving, along with the rest of the Pro Touring F Body braces and vintage air

Finally we are up to date. The car is back home, the grills are in along with the HID lights. I’m in the process of putting the interior in. I’m going to put sound dampener down then I am just waiting on windows and the seat covers. Hope y’all like the Pics!

Thanks guys- it’s hard to believe and frustrating it’s taken this long but the car is really coming together nicely.

Honestly to do it again I would probably have stuck with the original plan, saved some $$ and had a decent driver. But, this was an experience I hadn’t gone through. I enjoyed the nut and bolt side of it, just not the ‘hot rodding’ side of it. Figuring out what did and did not work, lots of modifications, 1/2 the threaded were metric and 1/2 were standard on the brakes, etc.

Still- it should be a pretty damn nice car once it’s done.

Those wheels look familiar! Seriously, I like the way it's coming together and those wheels look a lot better on it than my old girl.

Yup! The wheels fit great. I still haven’t figured how to put air in them!!!

The car has been out of my possession for so long I forgot about your trick valve stems!

I think the car needs to come down in the back 1/2-1” but I am going to wait until the new suspension settles

I got some work done on the 72 this weekend. I scrubbed down the floors and lined them with sound deadener similar to dynamat. I got the carpet and door sill plates installed as well as the rear arm rests.

Since I had some time left I decided to throw the old seats in and I’m pretty happy with them. They aren’t correct, but they look pretty decent in the car.

I’m second guessing if I need to recover them
