Default Tool kits

Ok guys need a little help, I want to get a basic tool set for my Daughters boyfriend. He’s not really a manly tool man if you get my drift lol. That being said I don’t want to go Craftsman or Milwaukee or the best brand. Harbor Freight has a nice reasonably priced basic set, what are your opinions or suggestions?

Yeah I got Miranda the pink Craftsman set 2 years ago. She knows more about tools than him lol. Doing the motor swap on Miranda’s WS6 they both got a taste of using tools, her better, due to being born into a tool using family, but he’s more the office type.

Your local Napa store has some sets at a really good deal right now. They have a 78pc Evercraft set for 45.99 and a 159 pc Craftsman set for 179.00 plus a bunch of other sets.

I know you said no craftsman but Lowe’s, Menards, even Ace carry them now. You can buy a sets from $50-200 and they come in a molded case.

If he’s the type of guy who doesn’t know which way to turn a wrench, what’s the point in spending a buncH of dough on a tool set for him? I’d go with something cheap.

Kinda thought the same thing, but if you want to get a tool set I would at the least get a decent Craftsman set, or Kobalt from Lowes, the Husky stuff from HD is pretty good also. There are many variations and you could get a basic set of box wrenches from $20 up to a full set for $100. I have a set of Sears (not craftsman) that I got for a Christmas present probably 40 years ago that I still use on a daily basis. Even if you get the most basic, get one that is half decent that will last a long time.

Because he wants to learn how to work on things, but just never had to do so as a kid so I don’t want to get him a high end set of tools to learn on. He means well, just never had to work on things and has no clue how to put bits in a drill, or even sizes of sockets etc. we have to start somewhere with him.

Default 301 tool kit

The 301 piece from Harbor Freight is legit. I even carry one in my Tempest. The ratchets are the weak point, but if they break you can warranty it through HF or upgrade to a Lowes or HD style.

Since he will need something to work on more modern cars too, I would start him out with metric tools first. Such as a metric screw driver set, maybe some metric adjustable wrenches, simple stuff.

My daughter dates a similar guy, I suggest starting with the basics and slowing adding on to it if he show interest.

Summit has a good deal.

The initial cost comparison of the good tools and the cheap ones pales if one throws in the cost of the emergency room when one of the cheap socket breaks, or an open end wrench jaw expands.

How well do you like the guy?

Jon.

He’s a good guy and my Grand Daughters Father, and wants to learn, he was right there every time we worked on my Daughters car engine swap.

Don't buy anybody "cheap" tools!!! More damage is done trying to fix something with poor quality tools. Either buy him decent tools or don't get him any at all. Like BURD stated try the swap meets. I found a lot of good tools there cheap. Don't forget name brand tools have warranties. Sometimes you can find cracked Snap-On sockets for next to nothing. Buy them then return them for free new ones.

I don’t have time for swap meets that don’t exist this time of year where I live anyway, this is to be a Christmas gift. Harbor freight has lifetime warranties on the sets I saw, I think they were Pittsburg brand. He needs his own tools he is very hard to buy for and always borrowing our tools, so thought it a good idea for a gift.
