I'm replacing the timing chain cover on my 71 Firebird which requires removing the harmonic balancer. Is there a good way to remove the harmonic balancer bolt? I've not been able to loosen it due to the crank turning. Also, I am assuming the bolt should loosen by turning it counter-clockwise. Is that correct? Thanks.

You are correct, counter-clockwise to remove the bolt. I use a electric impact wrench with no extension, just the 15/16 deep socket. The extension sucks up the impact and the bolt is torqued to 160 Ft Lbs. If you want to get primitive you can put a breaker bar on it, lay the breaker bar on the drivers side frame and hit the starter, that will get it loose. If you use the breaker bar, MAKE SURE THE COIL IS DISCONNECTED SO THE ENGINE WON'T START.

Breaker Bar and Starter sounds useful. I'll have to do that for next removal.
I typically jamb a 3/8 extension (abouty 12" long) into on of the 3 converter mount flanges and let the extension run into the garage floor or starter nose while I breaker-bar the Balancer bolt. PITA as the 3/8 extension will slid out of position.

I used Robert's primitive technique...bumping the starter with socket on bolt and breaker bar against the ground on the driver's side. It worked great. I borrowed my brother-in-law's impact wrench for the reinstall. Thanks for the tips.
