On my 68 I took a page from the old school Super Stock playbook and added an extra leaf on the front of the spring. Overall spring rate remains the same so I had the same ride, but was as to get rid of the traction bars.

It may be worth checking to see of proper heat treated U bolts are available for that application. They are much stronger than sheet metal straps and tend to fit better anyway.

I had the exact same issues with similar damage to my driveshaft and I had new tight fitting u joint straps. I put traction bars on and the problem went away. The traction bars hung low so I got rid of them and the ultimate fix for me was to get 2” lowering springs from Eaton Detroit spring. The car has been fine and I can powershift, dump the clutch etc and the driveshaft doesn’t hit the rear axle.

My thoughts are the original springs in my car had a torch applied to them to lower the car 2”but ruined the temper on the springs causing them to wrap under acceleration.

Springs and new yoke on their way across the pond this week, be here end of next week. Not going to tear it down until they get here though.

After looking at all my options I decided to give the Summit stock height springs a shot for $204 a pair. They are rated a little light at 110lbs. Reason I did this is primarily economics. Summit ships free to military APO overseas. Any other spring would have had to ship to a buddy and then he mail USPS to me as no vendors want to use USPS to APO. Costs to ship to him plus the second mailing ($130} were just too painful. The roads here are rough so the lighter spring might be a better choice. Plus, I don't race the car any more so I decide to go this route. IMO it was the best choice for now. I can cut my old springs and do the half leaf mod as well. Plus, I have the front mount drilled to relocate the front bolt up 3/4" so maybe it will work.

I also decided to look at extending the pinion snubber down if needed.

I think 110s are going to be way too light, it will be bouncing off the snubber constantly.

You need min of like 190s, if not 200s.

IMO, the GW springs are pretty much the go-to, like these:

Remember that factory is 126. This is a street car. The only rubber it burns is a stoplight or traffic circle, no track here. Eaton HP springs are 175 and their disclaimer says "use these only if you don't care one bit about ride quality". I'll take their advice. I don't live where there are beautiful concrete 8 lane highways. I live in a rural farm area of NE Italy where two lane blacktops have not been paved in years and have trucks on them all day long. Even a Mercedes rides rough here. I will sacrifice ride for traction at this point. I even removed the subframe connectors because the car was just to rough on the local roads.

NE of Venice, Google Aviano Air Base, I live in Budoia just up the road. Do you mean Bergamo? My wife is from Brescia not far from there, I lived 10 min from Lake Garda for 10.5 years before moving up here in the Friuli Region. Name is John. Feel free to PM if you want some Italy info. I have lived here since I was 19, arrived in 1983 as an E-3 in the AF. We have quite a few Pontiacs in Italy and have a club on FB.

I'll be in Rome first week of May ... but I'll be drunk every day and night.

I like to average three bottles of Vino Rosso a day.

Good thing you will not have your Pontiac to drive there in that condition, lol!
Be sure to leave some room for good food also besides liquid, anyway have safe travels when you go!

Follow up. New springs installed and they raised car 1/2". Pic shows old next to new. I have not disassembled old springs to see if yhey might be broke. Also installed new Moser forged yoke. Checked yoke runout and started at .008 and got to less .001. Cannot test drive as I am in lockdown week number 5 in Italy. Will advise when I can drive.

Hi Sarge, as you probably know by now we never made it to Italy. Wife's cousin told us to stay put before the lock down and as it turned out it was good advise. I misspelled the town where her cousin lives, it's Morbegno. how close are you? Not trying to steal thread here, apologies. Mike

No problem, I like informing people about Italy since this month makes 37 years since I first arrived on that USAF bird... Yep, smart move not coming. Morbegno is about 4 hours from me, I live in Budoia in the Pordenone province NE of Venice. That is beautiful area up there, but to be honest there ain't many places here that aren't. Even Naples has its charm.

The wife and I are in lockdown and this coming Monday starts week 6. We are retired so we started about 3 weeks before the official lockdown and it is starting to be a PITA. We are lucky since we have a big house with a big yard and live 200 meters from the mountains and trails and some field/woods. You can only go walking to take the dogs so we split the "task". Being in the city must really suck. I have received a couple of notifications from the US Embassy that unless I was prepared to stay long term I should head back to the US. Wife is Italian and this is home. I was supposed to be working on property in OK near Lake Texoma and enjoying our new RV we bought last year but I decided not to fly back in mid Feb as I did not want to be the carrier if I was positive. Don't see making the States anytime soon, probably be fall at the earliest. I know an AF Pararescue guy who lives down the street from me (USAF Aviano Air Base is nearby). He got it coming back from the States in early Mar. Probably on the plane. Been down pretty hard and family got it too. Nasty stuff. Death counts are still happening and it is not over yet. Don't see Italy getting any tourism this year.

You are not missing anything here other than denial and incompetence.

Wife and I look to retire in a few years to Spain or Portugal - and buzz around Europe in the Lemans or TA, would like to look you up then.

Those are both good choices. I know some Italians who have retired in both countries as they are a little cheaper than Italy. Spain has come a long ways in the last few years.

I like Portugal the better of the two - cheaper, loved Lisbon and they were quite friendly - but Portuguese is a tough to learn vs. Spanish and Lisbon is at the ass end of the moon distance from everything else. Wife was stationed in Estartit late 80's (USCG LORAN station)and liked it there.
