A top bearing shell with a wide but very shallow groove on the backside could be an option on a stock block, rather than cutting a groove in the part of the block that is prone to cracking, may be even better on an aftermarket block too.
I'm looking into these mods for my current stock block turbo combo build, along with a full flow oil filter delete mod too.

Hmm, probably the shallow groove on the backside of the shell would weaken it too much over the front groove area..
