It left me scratching my head, maybe he was confusing a 69 with 68. The suggestion of using a early bolt on emblem wasn’t appealing to me either.

It is interesting though. I had a friend stop by a couple weeks ago & he was surprised that the car would have vinyl decals. I could see people in 1968 peeling those off as its was for sure an era of metal emblems heck even the dealers were riveting on metal logos back then. I think that would have bugged me if I would have been a car buyer in that era.

When did decals like this first start appearing on GM cars as name callouts? Just curious.
Yeah, his post got me thinking about that decal as well. I know they came new with the decal...that's not even an issue. I was surprised that someone who had one new would forget that. It was one of the most iconic things about the '68 GTO to me. I'd never really thought about it but I guess that was really kind of unique at the time, just like the endura bumper. Others were doing it within a year at most though. Trans Ams, Judges, Road Runners, etc.

Off the top of my head the 68 GTO is the first car I can recall having decals ... also some of the GT Lemans?? Did any of the 68 RA cars have the Ram Air decal on the scoops?

No scoop decals for R/A cars in '68, that started in '69. The 1/4 decal is such a neat, modern detail, especially next to the arrowhead marker light. I could see folks looking at it as a step down in quality back in the day.

'68 seemed to be a big year for decals, Mopar definitely made use of them that year. Off the top of my head I can't think of any pre-'68 cars that use decals. Maybe something like a '67 Barracuda S? Superbird was '69.

By the way 68ragtop, on the color of the decal, my turquoise car had a white decal when I got it and I have no reason to think that it was changed. I've seen others in my paint color that had white also.
I went with black because I thought it complemented the top better.

Why is it that 68 and 69 GTO people seem to be the nicest Pontiac people?

Black on turquoise does look nice!

I just looked at my decals, They are as white as a piece of sheet paper. Bought them from Ames at the very least 10 yeas ago. They do say 3M on the backing so, a decent quality, but would they are for sure not Cameo Ivory.

Does anyone actually make an off white decal? I am tempted to break another rule & put black on the car...

The factory spec with a tank of gas but no people or luggage is about 9.5” in front and 9.0” in back measured on the bottom edge of the rocker molding just inside the wheel wells. This was with standard tires (G78), with G70’s the car would sit about a 1,4” lower.

Is there a 68 assembly manual? It would show the “correct” location.

No 68 assembly manual, but the 69 manual has a lot of 68 stuff in it. That's one I have. Seems to cover both years on many things.

I have the 68 service manual & I think that has specs too. I just thought that car in that pict looked low.

I have an extra set of decals in white...somewhere. Left over from when I was deciding. I'll see if I can take a look to see 'how white' they are. I've never noticed any white decals being anything other than pure white...but I've never paid much attention to that level of detail.

Speaking for '68 owners..we're submissive from all the abuse we've taken from '64, '65, '66, '67, '69, '70,'71, '72, '73 and '74 owners.

Well then..... If they don't make them in cameo ivory, I might as well put back ones on because white would be incorrect as well.

More proof that while some try to make their car "perfect", the factory did not care about perfection, only money.

Notice, the GTO decal is not in the same location on both 68's.

True. Several examples in this thread that show slight variation in placement.

So it would appear anything from centered to near level to the top of the side marker light would be correct. I am probably going to put mine centered, but cheated a smidge towards the top.

The 4 door car picture is cool. Where did that originate?

Also, My white "GTO" decals are white as a piece of sheet paper, not cameo ivory as it sounds like it should be. I won't be installing them until I am finished assembling & get one more & final polish on the paint. Getting close though.........

Anybody ever look into the "white" GTO decals? Mine are indeed white as white can be. Aftermarket decals I bought from Ames at least 10 years ago. Does anyone make a cameo ivory decal set?

I think white is correct myself...every one I've seen looked just 'white'...but honestly, I've never sweated those kind of details. Never would have crossed my mind to compare decal 'whiteness'.
