The trans that's called a "rock crusher", and has the greatest reputation for "whining"... IS the M22.

Man, you're hard to please. Since my first post on March 9, 2012 you have asked 78 people on PY to post a burnout video. After all that time you finally get one posted and it wasn't quite abusive enough. No wonder you're not married....har, har.

Actually, if you notice at the tail end of the video a neighbor pops over the crest of the hill heading the other direction and discretion kicked in pretty quickly.

...and the credit goes to you for posting one! Unfortunately it would appear we are in the minority here.

I saw that - figured you weren't going to go sideways in 2nd when they crested that hill. BTW - not married by choice this time around - 8 years & counting & she's still here....I'm a lucky guy!

Photobucket was in some weird mode, figured it out. Nice video, too bad the neighbor popped over the hill!

O.K.
Earlier in this post Bentwheelbob makes a reference to the M22 trans whining. I guess my question should have been: does the H/O cars all have M22's rather than M21's or was that an option?

All the 1971 and 1972 455HO four-speeds were M22s. It was the mandatory transmission for that engine option.

Well Steve didn't leave me much to do on the Black Car, but there are a few things. Mainly I have been trying to get the Truck finished so I can get it off the lift and get the Black Car up in the air for a thorough inspection of Steve's handy work. Here's the truck story from the PY Lobby:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=727561

There were a few things that were on Steve's list that I have inherited including the oil slinging A/C compressor. After having the car for only a short time I concurred that this was an issue and purchased a compressor pulley shield from Eckler's and got it installed today. Below is a picture.

Bob,

You need to get the new "RQ" air cleaner decal that ECS Automotive finally produced. Give them a call.

Got them ordered. Of course now I will need to bead blast and paint the air cleaner so that the bottom looks as good as the top. I also ordered a 1972 455HO emission decal and extra RQ decal for the Red Car post engine and driveline transplant.

Charles at ECS said that their phone had been ringing a lot today for the RQ decal.

I've never understood why some people cal any Muncie a 'Rock Crusher'...
As mentioned earlier, the one really alluded to by the term 'Rcok Crusher', is only the M22;
Which had the same gears ratios as the M21, but used straight cut gears - which made the whine.

It's absolute music...

IIRC what I've read correctly, the M22 was developed for the Corvette, and as such, was seldom used in a non-Chevrolet;
Once again, if my memory serves me correctly, the muncie transmissions used in Pontiac's goes like this
1967-1973 wide ratio = M20
1967-1970 close ratio = M21
1971-1972 close ratio = M22
1973 wide ratio = M21*
(iirc there has been some speculation as to actual transmissions used for 1973, and I believe early in the 1974 model year, the only four speed available was the Borg Warner Super T-10)

This thread is great...

The '72 and '73 Formulas both look great!

I don't why it took so much convincing to get them to make them. Hopefully you know where to place it.

HFR - Thanks for your post(s) - this is very timely. I saw your post on the 455HO thread and the picture showing the air cleaner and RQ decal. I was planning on being lazy and replying with a question about the proper location for the air cleaner decal. I assume your picture shows the correct approximate location of the decal within assembly line standards? I am sure I could do a search here and find much debate about the proper location, but right now I am in favor of less debate and more leadership.

What's the current majority view on location?

Thanks for all your contributions sheparding the Pontiac faithful.

Regards,

Bob
