2020 Pontiac Powered Class Racing
Well, it's 2020 ! How weird is that ? Your answer may depend on how old you are.
Anyhow, it's time to start talkin about the 2020 class racing season. The Winternationals race is just over a month away, followed by the Arizona Nats a couple of weeks later. Sorry to report that there are very few Pontiacs on the pre-entry lists for these races. But, there are still lots of Pontiac class racers, as racing moves farther East & Summer arrives. The Lucas Oil Series, division races, will kick off down in sunny South Florida, in late Jan, while most other states are still having winter. Another follows, 3 weeks later, in GA, then in South Louisiana, the next week. https://lucasoil.com/lucas-oil-news/...eries-schedule The Baby Gators & Gator Nats are coming in March. Here's a question for you East coast Class racers. On the Gators pre-entry list is a car/driver I'm not familiar with. it's listed as a C/SA '69 Bird. The name is Bruce Noland. He's from Leesburg, VA, & his NHRA # is 1788. Anybody have any info on this car/driver ? I looked him up. He has had a quick '72 Camaro Stocker in recent years. So, unless that's a misprint, he's either built a '69 Bird, or is scheduled to drive one for somebody else. Anyhow, in just a few weeks, here we go ! |

So, I just read a rumor that the div 1 '69 Bird is gonna be a T/A. Seems that this guy submitted all the info to NHRA to make the '69 T/A legal for NHRA race events.
This MAY be a first. I've never seen a '69 TA clone running in a competitive NHRA, class race. Don't know if there were any back in the old days or not. Last edited by ponyakr; 01-03-2020 at 01:52 AM. |

Well, the word now is that the '69 Bird will be at the Gators, but will not be in T/A trim. I only know of one other '69 Stocker still racing. It's the John Schloe car, out on the West coast.
Have a 2015 listing for Kevin MacNicol, in an E/SA '69 Bird. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2015#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 01-21-2020 at 06:23 AM. |

OK, qualifying at the 1st div 2 race, starts Fri. Don't know if any Pontiacs will be there or not. I think Michael Brand lives in Alabama. So maybe he'll be there.

Kevin's car is now Super Street, HP rating do not favor the 69' like the 67' and 68's. I now of at least 4 Pontiacs in Super Street.

I assume maybe John Schloe caused that hit, since he had the quickest '69 Bird running ? At the '14 Winter Nats, he ran a 10.54, which was 1.010 under his index. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2014#indextop The '68 & '69 GTO's now have the best hp factor for that engine, @ 325hp. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...5&MAKE=Pontiac http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...4&MAKE=Pontiac Last edited by ponyakr; 01-30-2020 at 04:17 AM. |

Only Pontiac I see on the Stock/SS Q-lists is the '78 T/A driven by Jack Good. It's #23 on the SS list. That old Bird has made lots of passes. Recently found out it was owned by Ken Shawver, for quite a few years. First time it shows upon at Indy, on DRC is in 1998. Won class at Indy several times.

They finally posted results on DRC.
As said, no Pontiac Stockers. And Jack Good has the only Pontiac Super Stocker. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Today's action was rained out. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Hey, you Pontiac S/ST guys down there: How about getting some good close up pics of all the Pontiac powered cars there, & posting them here. I like to have fairly current pics of the cars I mention. I have sometimes posted older pics, & later found out the car has had a paint color change, & looks completely different. |

OK, I swiped some of these pics off the Pontiac Drag Racer FB page.
These are supposedly some Pontiac powered cars that are at the div 2 race, in Fla. I say "supposedly", because Byron does not like it when anyone posts anything on his site that is not Pontiac powered. These last 2 cars I know nothing about. The Vent has a Chevy bowtie on the side. But, it looks as if it sorta has the beginnings of the bird emblem, added to the bowtie. I'm talkin about the bird emblem used on the 1st gen Firebirds. I could understand that modified bowtie, if the body was a Chevy, but the engine was a Pontiac. But, since the body appears to be a Ventura, & has Pontiac power, I see no point in the Chevy bowtie. So, if that car has Pontiac power, somebody please explain the bowtie to me. Hey it's really NOT my business what engine anybody runs in their car. But, I mention this for 2 reasons. (1) I try to limit my Pontiac powered racing threads, to vehicles that actually have a Pontiac V8 engine in 'em. Sometimes I get the engine wrong, especially with the GT cars. I appreciate it when somebody lets me know when I post a Chevy powered car, or when I fail to post a Pontiac powered car. I have nothing personal against any racer. But, I just choose to report on Pontiac V8 powered cars only. I did run across some old OHC six powered Stockers recently. But I don't think anybody is currently running one in Stock or SS. (2) Some of the guys on that FB page will call you out, if you post something that does not have Pontiac power. And if brought to Byron's attention, he'll usually delete any pic & info about the car. So, I'm just givin ya'll a heads-up on that. Might save somebody some embarrassment and/or hard feelings. So, anyhow, here's the pics. For you guys down at that race. Please take pics of the engine bay of all the Pontiac powered cars there & post 'em here. Hey, I know racers can get busy at races. But, there are probably some ladies in the Pontiac group that wouldn't mind going around to the Pontiacs & taking pics. Keep in mind, there are thousands more Pontiac fans here, than at the race. Many of us would like to know what's goin on at the races. Most of the time, all we get are DRC results, the next day. Hey, ya'll share the racing experience with us, PLEASE ! With today's modern technology, there is really no reason not to, unless nobody in the whole group is willing to make the effort to do it. Good luck to all Pontiac powered racers at this race, and for this entire season ! If I have any names wrong, somebody please post the correct info. |

The Ventura is Pontiac powered. He works at a Chevy dealership that I believe helps him out.

I was .014 to his .031. My car is a a little more "dramatic" than his on the starting line. His runs like a damn freight train at the other end though.
