I'm just getting used to The Forums, so if this has been discussed previously, please point me in the right direction(s). Can someone give us specifics on the degree of difficulity in putting a 4-speed auto tranny (which one should we use?) in a 2nd Gen. Firebird? Both my nephew and son are considering it, but none of us are sure of where to start. The '74 T/A has a Pontiac 455 and TH400, the '79 is a 10th Aniv. 403 Olds V-8 with TH350. These are street-driven cars, and they just want to use a little more rear gear (like 3.73) and the OverDrive to give them some MPG's back. Thanks!

If you're talking about putting in a 700R4 four speed auto w/ OD, several companies make an adapter plate that allows it to be used w/ conventional Pontiac, Olds, & Buick blocks.
Look up PATC on the web. Believe the biggest problem will be the linkage(s).

The 200-4r is a bolt in without any adapters, and is the same length as the stock th350. However in their stock form, they will not stand up behind the torque of a 400 or 455. If you have it rebuilt, it can take just about anything you can throw at it. If you have one of the 2004r gurus build it like Art Carr or Level 10, it is expensive ~$1800. If you buy the parts and do it yourself, it won't cost half of that.
