Default 235/60 r 15 tires on '66-'67 Tempest

Any of you use 235/60r15 sized tires on the front of your '66-'67 model? I presently have 225/70r15 BFG Radial T/As on the front of mine, and 225/70r15 on the rear. I want to go up a size on the front, and down a size on the rear so I can have the same sized tires, (a better overall look, and I will be able to rotate them.) Was curious about the wheel clearance and how this sized looks on these cars.

Up a size in front and down a size in the rear won't give you the same size tires... if I'm reading this right. And it won't look right. I have 225/60x15s on the rear of mine and 225/70x14s up front. These don't look right as the sidewalls heights are different. 235s and 225 70s will have a different height and tread width too. Tread width alone won't look right with 60s up front and 70s in the rear.

235/60s will work on the front.

From Summit Racing:

235/60s.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BFG-09082/

225/70s.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BFG-58541/

Look at the diameter and tread width for both. You'll see what I mean.

Sorry about that. Kinda miss worded it. Was thinking outloud again. I meant I was going to go to 235/60r15 all the way around, just wanted to know how they cleared up front. Going smaller in diameter in the back and larger in diameter (overall height) in the front. The 225/70r15 and 225/60r15 combo I have right now doesn't look right to me. You answered my question about the clearance. Thanks. Appreciate the response. Just went back and read it closely. I meant to say I had the 225/60r15 in front. Sits too low in front and too high in back.

I've run both 235/60R14 and 235/60R15 for years on my 67 GTO. They both fit just fine up front. Two things though:

1. If you have a larger aftermarket front sway bar, you might rub on it just a little during full lock turns (only enough to touch, but no damage).

2. Also, if your factory springs have sagged a bit (or if you have lowering springs on the car), you might also rub against the fender a bit during cornering if you have a lot of weight in the car (like 2 or more people in the car). Not a big problem though, just something to think about.

Enjoy!

Have Vista Cruiser spec springs I installed in there about 14 years ago, along with Edelbrock IAS shocks. I do have a larger front sway bar, but if all it does is lightly rub that on turns I don't mind. That already happens in my '74 Cutlass, as I have 235/70 r 15 tires on that one. They are a little large, but all they do is rub the sway bar on tight turns. Can't tell driving the car, only way I know is a "polished" spot on the bar where it rubs. Thanks for the info.

At least I didn't read it wrong. I kinda thought you meant different but wasn't sure. LOL

I've got a 1-1/4" front swaybar and it clears the 70s I have with no problem. One that size should clear 60 series tires on 15" rims as well. The front end configuration of the 67 A-bodies and my 79 Formula look about the same, with the same amount of room in the front wheel wells and layout of the steering components. So I don't think there'd be much of a problem.

When I finally get new tires for mine I'm looking to go 255/60-15s in the back and 235/60-15s up front. But first I have to spring for a set of 15x7 or 8" Cragar SSes for the front.

I have 235/60/15 up front and 255/60/15 in the rear with a wider rear 12 bolt from a 71. I do not recall the offset on the 15 rally one wheels, though.

I don't think I could go any larger on either. The rears have just enough room for me to run a finger between it and the fender. But it has never rubbed.

The fronts have caught my wheel well trim a couple of times on sharp turns that involve a dip or a bump in the road.

There are a couple of pics of my tires in this thread. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...12+bolt+finger

I got all of my advanced info from PY member Champ, he knows his stuff on tires.

How does your car ride and handle with these on front and rear?

Ride and handling is fine but in all honesty I feel no discernible difference from when I was running 14" wheels. But I really like the way these fill out the wheel wells to the max.

I have 235-15 on the front and 245-15 on the rear. As Goatmanmitch said, hitting a bump while turning hard, like into a driveway, the front will rub, if I am going too fast, but never while driving at cruising speeds.

Those tires look good on there. Nice looking car. I'm looking for a little more rubber on the road like you have. Ride , handling, and roadholding are important to me, especially with the 455 and overdrive like I have. Gives a better safety margin (like when someone cuts you off) at the comfortable, higher cruising speeds I attain with this combination.

A better swaybar up from will help handling.... 1-1/4" works great. Maybe boxed lower control arms with a swaybar for the rear..... 1-1/4" too maybe. Better shocks too. Just bigger tires and tire tread alone won't improve things, and give you the handling you might want.

Already have 1 1/4' anti sway bar, polyurethane bushings, rear anti sway bar with boxed control arms, front disc brakes, aluminum rear drums. Did that 20 years ago. Installed Edlebrock IAS shocks about 10 years ago (these are very nice) Car handles very well.(especially for a wagon). Just added hydroboost recently. I just want to put a little more rubber on the road.

You've got the good stuff, now the tires should be the last good thing to finish it off. Once you get them on, we'll need some photos.

Interesting, last year I switched to Rally IIs and 235/60r15s all the way around on my 66 and have no rubbing issues. I installed brand new coils and cut the front by 1 coil, no rubbing.
