Default 60 vs 80 psi oil gauge

I have a 67 GTO with stock 400 4-sp. A few years ago I purchased a beautiful set of original rally gauges but never did anything with them. So I finally decide to install this spring and while testing the temp/oil pod I was shocked to see I have a 60 psi oil gauge. How I didn't realize at the time I have no idea. Poor eyesight maybe. But the gauge is working nicely albeit with an 80 psi sending unit.

So a few questions: would the gauge read lower or higher with the 80 psi sending unit? I read where very early 67 cars had the 60 psi gauge so I guess I'm somewhat factory correct but the big question is will I be OK with 60 or will this gauge want to peg at acceleration? Why was the switch made from 60 to 80 in the first place is it anything to do with 389 vs. 400? I think finding a nice stand-alone 80 psi gauge is going to be near-impossible so I'm going to need to go with what I have.

thanks for any input!

I think you should just drive it and see what the gauge reads at different speeds....as long as it's not pegged you should be fine. I'm sure there's a 60 psi sending unit available to make them match if you're having issues with the 80 psi unit.

My understanding has been 60 lb. for '66, 80 lb. for '67. Maybe you have a '66 gauge?

Personally I'd got with an 80 psi unit. I have one in my GTO, and with it it's never pegged out like a 60 would be if yours is running at 60 psi. But that's just my thoughts on it.

Early 67s still used the 60. Have an original with a date stamp: October 20, 1966

Absolutely correct, early 67 came with the 60 lb. gauge.

Ok, I should have said my 80 psi gauge is aftermarket. The one in the dash is 60. I shouldn't have but I assumed he was going to an aftermarket gauge and wondering if an 80 would be better than the 60, seeing he has an 80 psi sending unit installed. My bad.

The sender needs to match the gauge if you want an accurate gauge reading.
