Default Is it a GTO or not??

I am presently looking at a few GTOs?? that both need work. Besides paying for PHS documentation how can I be sure they are true GTOs before I buy them and spend a ton of cash restoring?

Look on the trim tag for 5N in the ACC line. This only works for some Pontiac plants. Also look inside the fenders for signs of LeMans or Tempest trim. For a 64, the vin must start with 824 and for a 65, the vin must start with 237 and the 7th number must be 1-5 indicating an 8 cylinder.

Nothing wrong with a Tempest of LeMans and build it the way you want it, just own up that's it's not a GTO.

Isn't the 7th number the plant where it's made at ? I think you mean the 6th number...

Pay for the PHS, don't even trust someone else's PHS. It is your money though. You don't want toend up dropping long $$ into restoring what you believe is a 4 speed tripower GTO, that turns out to be a 326 lemans.

On that 65 237375P VIN, the data plate on the firewall should have a "5N" code near the bottom. That is the Fisher Body code for GTO trim.

Most Pontiac MI built cars had the 5N code, and it is rare to see any Baltimore built cars (the other VIN) with it.

No 5N code on either data plate and no patched up holes on inside quarter pannels from lemans emblems

Thanks

Since no 5N code on the 237375P3----- VIN car, 99% chance it is NOT a factory GTO.

My VIN plate has the "5NW". What does the "W" signify?

Tell the seller if the PHS comes back as a non GTO he pays for it and if it comes back as a GTO you'll pay for it. Only way to be sure. My 65 post didn't have the 5N and it was a true GTO, so you can't go by that.

Another good thread on this subject - including the "5N" discussion.

Default 5 5N 5NW or nothing

I have 3 65 GTO's all built at different plants.
#1 Burgundy Black int 4spd with Tri-Power

01B 1
65-23737 PON14071
213-B N-N
2LGPV
5NW
27-2

#2 Palmetto Green Black int 4spd with 4bbl

12B 049
65 23737 BAL 3168
213 HH
5 (down in the lower corner by the rivet)

#3 Iris Mist Black int 4spd with 4bbl Body tag is different than above two. Has PONTIAC DIV before General Motors, probably because it is a Z code (Fremont) car.

5B
65-23737 BODY BF 13469
213-30 PP
55637 No 5 by itself?

I have not typed in all the unnecessary info but I am sure most people can figure it out.
All cars have PHS docs & are real GTO's
None are for sale so please don't ask. All are projects that I am saving for the future. All safely stashed away from prying eyes. I would have posted images but I am having a upload failure.

HobbyGTO65,

Where was your 65 Post car built? I can explain the lack of a 5N on my 64 car (992 Code Factory Zone Car) PHS paperwork, John V confirmation, etc but if you have a Pontiac or KC built car this would increase my number of "Non 5N" cars from those locations to 5 cars. Chit happened on the line.

Tom Vaught

ps 5 cars out of literally thousands made would make it very nearly impossible if Pontiac or KC but NOT IMPOSSIBLE.

Sorry Tom, I sold the car two years ago and went to the dark side. I think it was Kansas but just turned 59 and can't seem to remember what I did yesterday.
