Default 68 Olds 88 - Manual Shift

1968 Olds Delmont 88 2 dr hardtop
3 spd column shift, std drum brakes.

Been picked over pretty good but the clutch linkage is still there with pedals, no trans, bell housing or upper column. Hit on drivers side.
Will the linkage/pedals work on a Pontiac B body?

San Diego area South Bay Pick Your Part

Very very rare and I'm surprised they made one in '68. I once owned a '61 88 std shift station wagon and did some research on it and learned that only 1% of full size olds cars were std. shift that year. The under body linkage was really weird so if the under body linkage on that car you found is gone that may be a deal breaker on switching it to another car? I can't answer re '68 olds std shift stuff working on a Pontiac but the '61 stuff was completely different from what a '61 Pontiac would have had.

Whether they fit a Pontiac or not, I think the pedals and linkage would be worth harvesting - there may be some Olds fan out there who would love to have them.

There's a '68 Olds factory brochure as well as a salesman specs manual here: http://oldcarbrochures.org/United%20...ile/index.html It does show that the 88 had a manual transmission as standard equipment, the 98 came standard with an automatic.

Looks at the brochures for subsequent years, a three speed manual on the column was standard equipment in the 88 until 1971. Pontiac eliminated availability of a manual transmission in full size cars mid-year in 1971, I don't know if Olds did the same or not.

Being an olds guy, that is a super rare setup. Valuable? not likely.

Will it fit the equivalent pontiac? no clue!

Buicks did same, early 1971. So I'd assume Oldsmobiles were also cut off that year.
My brother found a '71 LeSabre with 3-on-the-tree about twenty years ago and kept it for a while. I'd bet an Olds full size was even more scarcely produced.

This particular car didn't appear to have any options. Two barrel, engine is still all there, I think it was a 400.
I may go back and take the clutch set up out of it. It appears have been rust free with all the glass intact. Just that hit on behind the drivers door. I grabbed the voltage regulator out of it since the date on the VR was good for my GTO. (Build date on the Olds was a week earlier than my GTO) Nice to have a date correct spare.

Sadly, a case of where rarity doesn't equal value...I'd love to see cars like that preserved, but there's no financial sense in it.

If you can grab the plates and license plate frames, I'd be a buyer.

Unfortunately they rip (literally) the plates off when they lay the cars down in the yard and destroy them.

No 400 engines in 68 Delmont. Should be a 350 Rocket.

Looking at the salesman spec guide and factory brochure in the link I posted earlier, it appears the 400 was only available in mid size cars that year. The Delmont 88 standard engine was a 250hp 2 barrel carb 350. There was an optional 310hp 4 barrel carb 350, and there were also three different 455s available (310hp, 320hp, and 365hp with 510ft-lbs torque - that last one would make the car move. )

Having said all that, if I read the salesman spec guide correctly, manual transmissions were only available with the base 350 engine in the Delmont 88.

Back in the day, that would have been an easy fix at the body shop.

Thanks Stu. It was a shot in the dark on my part. :
My parents had a 52 Olds 88 back in the day. I wrecked it; I was six years old when I did.

That car appears to have plates on it. You gotta look close.

The picture was taken in the holding area. No plates in the yard accessible by customers.

This thread brings back memories of a dark blue 64 Grand Prix that ran around in the Portland, OR area for years, might still be around. Really nice, clean car, 3 on the tree.

Many years ago I was in the Pick N Pull in Fresno and found a 2 door sedan Catalina with 3 on the tree in the "Builders Section" It had a Chevy small block in it at the time. I couldn't take on another project. Went back a while later the car was in the yard for dismantling. I was hoping someone would have bought it. I did remove the clutch pedals and linkage. I still have the stuff in a box in the garage somewhere.

Two years ago at the Clovis BOP show there was a '65 Olds Delmont 88 with its original owner, an 80+ retired police officer from San Francisco. It had the original 425 HP engine, 4 speed long tail Muncie trans, console, and positraction. Dark blue car and a real sleeper/screamer. He had driven it the 200 miles to Clovis for the show. I have pics somewhere....it was my favorite car in the entire show. Have never seen one like that and don't expect to see another one.
