What are your before/after temps?

Highway temp in az after about 10 mile was about 210 now its running 190 on a 95 degree day. Easy fix, 5 bucks in new gaskets and about 90 minutes of work.

I'd send you a buck via PayPal but you'd end up with 20 cents after the fees kick in so I'm offering one free radio repair. There's a lot of useful info on this site but your cooling fix is tops. Thanks!

I just removed my pump today ...and saw the large gap ,between the impeller and plate.I beat the plate and got it as close without hitting the impeller on my 67 GTO . Put it all back together and drove it home...got stuck at some traffic lights and temp went up to 215...and it was cool at 7:30 tonight. The car has factory AC that works ..but..I can't use it due to hot engine temps.Have the 19" 7 blade fan with shroud and all baffles are there too...new 180 thermostat...spring inside lower rad hose....new Hayden Super Duty clutch too...My next move is to install a new Autometer liquid filled temp gauge ...to get an accurate temp reading. Then if no luck.....what are you guys running for a rad ?..I have the orig 4 core Harrison... Do I go Alu ( what brand ?)... Or the Copper dessert cooler ???? Thanks

I would get a hand held thermal thermometer and check the temperture of the thermostat housing when it heats up. Check the temperture differerece between the top and bottom hoses to see what the temp difference is. 215 setting with cast iron heads and engine is not that unnormal. The dummy light does not come on until somewhere around 240.

I'd also suggest ensuring your timing is set correctly. You might need to advance it if you're not running a stock cam. Maybe even if you ARE running a stock cam. I went through a lot of temp issues similar to you. Tried all the ricks, but once I got the timing happy, temps dropped down into a very acceptable range. Someone told me a while back that our Pontiacs like more advanced timing. I can see that now. Just something worth looking into.

A digital infared thermometer is a great tool to have on hand for this sort of thing. My factory gauge shows 220 but my digital thermometer shows 190 at the thermostat housing. There are millions of them available on eBay or Amazon for not a lot of money;

This is from the GTO Tech forum....

We now have a part number from Gates and you can see that Andy posted for me. Forget Cardone as they haven't even bothered to let me know the correct part number I've been looking for for a couple of years.

Remember.... Gates 43122.

Without having to go through the last 10 or 20 pages...Is that the accepted 8-bolt water pump Gary? https://www.amazon.com/Gates-43122-W.../dp/B000C2Y0L6

It is cast implellar and I believe I actually ordered it from Amazon. I consistently run at thermostat temp (180) unless sitting at a long traffic light and then it creeps up to 190. I've made a lot of changes to the engine and cooling system, but I still run original divider plates with the Gates pump, my original a/c Harrison radiator with a re-core, and the 19 inch clutch fan with a Hayden HD clutch. I'll look though my photo file on my laptop and post here if I can locate the shot of the pump impeller.

Charles, that's what I was wondering about....the cast impeller. I have one here but the bearing is a little rough.
Any of you guys know if the shaft is the same between the cast and stamped impellers? Maybe I could pull the old one and press it onto the new one if it comes stamped?

Got one of the Gates 43122 pumps through Amazon. We'll see what it is when it gets here.

Pics of Gates 43122. Purchased from Rock Auto $39.70 + shipping. Cast impeller, eight bolt. Appears a solid unit but as most everything an offshore item. While test fitting I did notice that the casting where the holes are is a bit thicker than stock and the nuts that go on the studs only go to the top of the studs; on the OEM a few threads stick out so the slotted nuts provide some grip. Shouldn't be a a problem with a dab of Loctite.

the cast impeller on the Gates 43122 has full length very aggressive vanes, unlike what was used on a late '63 & '64 8 bolt waterpump. One needs to understand, the '64 radiator has both the rad inlet & outlet on the same side (pass side) of each tank. One can actually circulate the coolant through the radiator too quickly, that's why early 8 bolt pumps used a shorter less agresive vane impeller, than the impellers used in the 8 bolt pumps used from '65-68.
