For the average guy/girl you would have to sell a reproduction for $500 or less. There are not enough high dollar cars out there to sell one much more expensive than that. The current estimate is that there are 20,000 1964 GTOs left. How many of those cars are worth spending big buck on a wheel?

The plastic standard wheel on those cars was a fantastic piece.

Just recasting a common plastic deluxe wheel is more than $500 these days.

If someone isn’t willing to spend at least $1500 for a nice reproduction of this wheel they’re never going to own one.

No matter how nice your car is or isn’t having a nice steering wheel makes the drive all that more enjoyable, it’s right there in your face and you’re holding it in your hands.

These wheels aren’t just desired for 1964 GTOs, they’re used by Pontiac enthusiasts on other year cars and not necessarily on GTOs exclusively. It’s a special wheel with great appeal so it’s not limited to whatever 1964 GTOs that are left.

All I can say is the next time one pops up for $2500 to $3000 you’d better grab it.

I did and I don’t regret it, the car I’m using it on is far from being a show car. Buy what you want, life is short. Some of us won’t settle for the same Grant or whatever brand aftermarket steering wheel that everyone else has.

Let’s face it, almost none of these cars are worth even half the money we throw at them. Spend and enjoy before you take the dirt nap.

Hey, I like my Grant WOOD wheel. It's even a bit smaller which works without a tilt column, for me.

I have one that's perfect. It came on my '64 GTO in 1985. I paid $4,500 for the car. So the steering wheel is almost worth the purchase price! Crazy!

That is a crazy high survival rate for 64 GTO's. With a total production of 32,450 for 64, less than 1/3 of them are gone after 60 years? I find that very hard to believe. Happen to remember the source for survival rate?

Man I've always loved that 64 wood wheel! I bought them for the two 64 GTO's I had back in the 80's and I thought they were expensive then. I paid about $400-$500 each for nice examples, with maybe just a hairline crack and having to buy the horn bezel. Back in 2011 at Carlisle, I saw a real nice one with a price tag of $2,200, but now they are out of sight!

It would be great if this could be done in the USA, but I believe the demand may be too low, especially if the cost is more than most of the potential buyers would pay. if a good quality one could be made somehow inexpensively (not going to happen), you would get more interest and sales from owners of vehicles other than just GTO's. Just wishful thinking.

I’m guessing that 400 or 500 dollars about 40 years ago would be roughly equal to 3 thousand dollars now so these wheels have been crazy expensive for a long time.

My home is worth roughly 6 times what I paid for it almost 40 years ago and a new car is probably about 6 times what it was back then as well.

I never expect the deck lid to be reproduced, just thought I'd throw it out there. An original Lemans or Tempest deck lid could be repaired for the price a repro.

About what I paid almost 5 years ago, pretty much equivalent to 3k today.

Offer 2k and you might score one for that or at least get a couple hundred knocked off the price.

Of course condition matters but you’re not going to find a good one for much cheaper if at all.

I get that paying stupid money for a steering wheel isn’t for everyone, but sometimes you just gotta throw down for the neat stuff you’ve always wanted…or forget ever having it.

One of those was in a package deal with a '65 LeMans coupe for I think $3500- pretty solid but had sat a long time. Wheel was off it- in the guy's office. Huge property, old assembly factory, lots of rusted heavy equipment & junk laying around in the weeds. Offered $750 for just the wheel, he turned it down. Found out why quick cash to a non-car guy didn't matter; he was in the process of selling the parcel for $52 million to PSE&G. A guy I know somehow got hold of it- he's been trying to sell it for 2 years now. I won't buy from him tho.

Buying the whole car then selling it and perhaps getting the wheel cheap or for free is what you could have done.

Getting rare parts that way is commonly done in this hobby, a bit of a hassle but in the end you get what you want.

I want one for my 64 Tempest Wagon, time to pay up.

On a side note why is this in Street thread and not 64-65 GTO Tempest and LeMans? Sorry for being critical.

Recasting the 1964-5 wheel is now north of $700 the last time I checked. Ive done the math 8 or 10 times on the 64 wood wheel reproduction. It can be done profitably, but the short end is the market return on an investment of that magnitude is more and quicker.

Just checked today at Koch
$600 per recast on black deluxe wheels.
Then probably figure shipping both directions too , and Tax

That 64 eBay wheel is now $1850 with free shipping and insurance.

Saw a somewhat shabby ‘64 wood wheel needing cracks in the rim addressed that got snapped up quickly here for $700 several years back.

I almost grabbed it but already had mine and wanted to keep the original very decent plastic turquoise Deluxe wheel on my other ‘64.

If that one at $1850 is in good condition y’all better get off your wallets and snag it.
