Default 70-72 Grand Prix Console Top plate restoration

I'm restoring a 72 black console, the console is near perfect, but the top plate needs attention, it's not just painted black. It looks like a coating with a texture, the question is what it and is there an aftermarket spray that duplicates it. Or do I just paint it a black and call it good. Someone has to have restored one. Thanks in advance.

Default shifter bevel

The texture finish is more like what is called flocking I believe. Different than wrinkle paint. Not sure where but I have seen a few nicely refinished ones.

That's a tough one. My mom and dad bought a new 72 back in the day, and I always wondered how they created that finish. I'm glad mine is in pretty good shape. I wonder if you could very lightly dust it with spray on bedliner and then topcoat it with a semi-flat black paint. Just a thought. It might freshen it up enough that nobody would notice. Honestly, unless they are 69-72 lovers, no one will probably even notice. Or, if your texture is still pretty good, maybe just painting it will look fine. Let us know if you find a good restoration process.

It might be suede additive. On the early GTOs 64-67 the dash bezels were all painted to match the interior and to that bezel paint they added something into the mix so that the paint did not dry smooth & shiny. Once the paint is dry it has a texture to it so that it does not reflect light off of the inside of the windshield. In some of the older automotive paint books this is noted you add some of the suede additive a color that you may need to refinish one of those bezels.

I'm not sure how much time you want to spend on this, but I checked with a body guy whom I've known for over 20 years, and he mentioned the wrinkle paint. He wasn't aware of anything else. In searching the web, I came across an under-hood texture paint at Eastwood that might be similar. Here is a link to the paint. Hopefully this helps.

Always an education! Never heard of this stuff but made sense. Clicked and found something as you describe:

Probably other companies make similar products.

Default Bezel Texture

While it appear to look like Flocking I've seen, the factory must have used an additive in a paint like coating such as the suede additives. which the color samples I can find online look too coarse in texture. The Wensco paint can seems to state it is a medium texture, perhaps they have a fine texture one or other brands may. A custom recipe challenge anyone?

I think the intent (when GM was building your car) was for that paint to not appear glossy. You could overcoat it when dry using some matt finish clear, that or hold the spray can back more than it says on the paint instructions so the paint dry-mists as it hits the metal.

If you go over it a couple of times; allowing time to dry in-between, that will help to texture the finish, so it does not dry glossy.

(You could always practice on a spare piece of metal or plastic to get the look that you want.)

If I've done things right, I've attached a couple of photos of my console plate. It's in pretty good shape and I believe it's original. Keep in mind it is almost 53 years old but looks pretty decent. Hope this gives you an idea as to how it should look. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

I do appreciate all the info. Here are a few pictures. I did it in SEM trim black and I came out nice. I’m not using it just getting it ready for a swap meet.
