More Lifter chat
Johnson shows 4 different selections for Pontiac.
What are the .300 tall selections for? Is short travel more restricted than reduced? |

Short travel is for if you have a big cam heavy valve springs and want to run some RPM, for most the reduced travel is the best. Don't know anything about the .3 lifters.

I thought the .300 tall lifters were designed mostly for aftermarket blocks. Like the IA2. Taller lifter bores. That is what I'm using in our IA2 block. Crower

Google doesnt say anything about pontiac specifically, but there is information on .300 taller lifters on Yellow Bullet with Chevy stuff. It seems they were designed for blocks with taller lifter bores with the intent of keeping the lifter in the bore more with very high lift cams. Some people are using them on standard blocks for the benefit of using shorter pushrods and reduced deflection. There seems to be some question to if the oil band is the right place across lifter manufacturers for that use.
I wonder if one of the aftermarket pontiac blocks has a raised lifter bore? Not an expert, so I could have some of that wrong, but thats what a quick interweb search showed.

From the IA2 check list on the block.
You will need to use a ball hone in the lifter bore to deburr the lifter bores. Check them for the proper clearance to your lifter. Some people need more clearance than others, so check this out. The stock lifter will go in this block. When using high performance roller lifters, the spreader bar may hit the lifter top surface. This surface was raised to add meat to the lifter area so BBC lifters can be used. If using a .200 offset lifter you will need to have the bar raised .300 higher or mill the top of the lifter bores

Yes I had to hone my lifter bores in my IA11 block and ended up using SBC Eskey off set roller lifters. You can see in picture how much taller they are. Their on right.

Big difference in oil band location on those lifters Gach. Are the short lifters Jesel? Most lifter companies offer a tall body and standard height lifter for our Pontiacs. It's helpful to check clearance for the link bars when pre-assembling the engine. It's much easier to clearance the block at that point rather than once the short block is assembled. |
