Question 78 Trans AM radio/CB combo

1978 Trans AM question did a 78 have a factory AM FM radio with built in CB with a power CB antenna on the drivers side rear quarter, and a toggle switch below the volume knob of the radio in the dash? I saw one today and the owner said it’s factory.

The first Trans Am i ever saw with factory CB was the 79 silver Anniversary Edition. It had a pill in the power antenna on the passenger side fender. No switches no gimmicks.

RPO UN8 for CB in 77 was not a combo unit but in 78 it was a combo unit RPO UP5 and RPO UP6, is the way I recall it I was 17 working at Plaza Pontiac in Tucker Ga. as a trim mechanic.

Here’s a picture of the placement of the power supposed factory antenna that was a dual purpose radio and CB antenna. The guy told us it was an option that was listed in the Dealers only copy of options, not the brochures customers could look at and take with them in the showroom.

The integral units began in 1978, when the F body dash was modified to accept the standard sized GM Delco radios.

I would think it was possible as a dealer add-on, Im pretty sure that was available on most of the gm cars, I have seen quite a few caddies of that era with them as well. I think in 79 it was an option but I have no proof. I have never seen TATA with one but again im sure it was possible. TATA's did have a power ant. standard, located in the driver front fender.

This car we looked at had a toggle type switch for the CB antenna right in the dash under the radio tune knob and just to the left of the ash tray right in that rounded corner. Maybe someone cut that hole in and put the toggle for the antenna as an easier way to up the CB antenna? Otherwise where would the antenna get power from to go up? Or would that toggle be a factory thing?

Tech binder? Don’t have one where can I get one? I’m very knowledgeable about first gen birds, but not so much with the 77 to 79 second gens That’s why I’m counting on you guys to School me. and I have no manuals at all or knowledge where to acquire them for these second gens. I need and want to know all I can when I’m at a show and guys start talking to me about it.

This car with this CB Radio combo is another car we are thinking about buying, it’s not the current one I’ve been collecting parts for. The CB I bought from you burd is going in the car we bought 2 years ago.

In 1983 I bought a 1977 Pontiac Can Am and it had a factory 23 channel CB Delco AM/FM in it similiar to the one pictured. The car had 40,000 miles on it and was completely original. I don't know what the original antenna was as it had a K40 antenna on the forward edge of the deck lid.

It could have been a dealer install......but the factory never put an antenna in the rear quarter panel...on a 2nd gen bird...

First year for power antenna was 79....but located in left front fender...

A 40 channel cb with AM/FM radio...is shown in the 78 owners manual...I believe..

I had a loaded '79 W72 car I purchased from the original owner in '89. It had the factory power cb antenna that was located on the drivers side front fender. It went up when the radio was turned on.
