Default Trunk lid clangs when closing

On my 68 gp, when you close the trunk lid it sounds like metal banging on metal, instead of the nice soft landing that it should be. The weatherstrip appears to be old but not torn up or anything. COuld this be a latch adjustment that causes this, or more a weatherstrip issue?

Actually it feels more like the trunk lid hitting something, you can feel it int he lid when it closes. It doesn't really close smoothly, just sort of clanks closed.

Check where the latch meets the striker. Wrap masking tape on the top edges of the striker concentrating on the inside perimeter, 1 layer will do. Then carefully work the deck lid up and down a couple of times without latching it. The only marks that should be on the tape is where the striker latches. Anywhere else, the deck lid, latch and/or striker are out of alignment. If it is difficult to see a mark on the tape you can take a Sharpie and lightly put some ink color on the tape.

Ok thx will try that I think it is probably in the striker somewhere, since the trunk lid lines up properly, etc.

Or it could be the caulking between the inner and outer layers of the trunklid. It dries out over time, a few shots of expanding foam insulation from a spray can usually does the trick.

Yes, the glue between the inner and outer panels could be another issue as it hardens and breaks free. However, expanding foam is not the answer and can ruin a piece if used.

OK did the masking tape thing and it did not leave any marks on the tape. Must be out of alignment by the striker. ALso I noticed that there are no rubber bumpers inside the trunk lid lip area. I wonder if those are the same as the ones on the GTO?

Also if you haven't, Take a look at the torque rods were they are set into the hinges.
I had one with the lower hinge had a bent/distorted tab between rod notches.
This was allowing the rod to pop back and forth out of position.
It made quite the sound until I figured out what was happening.

Unless your positive it's coming from the lock/latch area.

Jeff, it is def. near the latch. Opens and closes smoothly until it is about to latch, like the trunk lid hitting metal. No noise from the rods.

If there are no rub marks on the tape then you can rule that area out and look somewhere else..

Try the tape trick all the way across the tail panel....or maybe carbon paper, like the Dentist does, to leave marks wherever there is contact.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed several things.

One, that if you bang your fist on the trunk it makes all kinds of hollow metal sounds, maybe that insulation in between the brace and the lid has fallen out.

Second, if you look at the trunk lid very closely as it is hitting the latch, it moves ever so slightly to the right when the latch hits the striker. Barely noticeable, but if your looking for it you can see it. I tried to adjust the striker, but nothing seems to help so far.

Does it have a trunk light? If it does maybe it’s loose or has fallen back down in the lid.

It has a trunk light socket but no blub.
Upon closer observation (again ) I noticed that the gap on the left side of the trunk is bigger than that on the right side. Maybe the lid is a little off? Or can I move the latch to adjust (not the striker)

Also, are the round trunk bumpers under the corners the same as the 68 GTO? They are both missing.
