A colleague at work has a 1968 Grand Prix he is going to try and sell. Being the "Pontiac guy" at work, he asked me what I thought it was worth and how to go about selling it. He has owned it 3-4 years. It is a running and driving car. Triple black. I took some pics which I will post. The 68 Grand Prix is an odd duck as most know. Catalina 2dr. body. Lots of unique 1 year parts. Some background for a better assessment. Body is fairly straight with some rust in the typical places. Rear wheel wells, lips and inners. Rear of front fenders, front lower doors. Front valence is trashed. Some bubbling rust under the vinyl roof at the bottom. Not all the way through but close in a few areas. Now for some good features. Front bumper straight, decent chrome. Same for rear. Hidden headlights/grilles in good shape and the hidden headlights work!. 400 4bbl. runs smooth and quiet. Turbo on floor. Moving to the interior: Three seats in good original condition. Some sort of cloth. Drivers seat has been replaced and it is vinyl and has a tear in it. Headliner big split at bow. Dash pad is perfect! Not a crack anywhere. Dash and console in pretty good shape, some wood peeling. Aftermarket radio, not sure if anything was cut. I suspect yes. Door panels have had a small speaker installed, damn. Car has AC, all appears intact. Belt removed but compressor turns normally. Underneath: Surface rust on frame, no holes. Floors look solid as well front to rear. Original fuel lines and brake lines have some rust but no leaks. Power brake booster is leaking vacuum. Owner has never been able to open the trunk since he bought it. I am going to help him gain access. From underneath I can see the frame to trunk mounts are rusted through both sides and would need repair. Trunk floor from underneath looks pretty good. Gas tank looks good. Core support is very weak at the lower mounts. Will need repair. So there you have it. IMO, with about $1000.00-1500.00 investment and some labor time, this could be made into a pretty nice daily driver. I doubt it would be worth a restoration unless you could do almost all if it yourself. Pretty unmolested car for it's age. I do not know it's original colors. Possibly, black. I will post some general pictures.
Moderators: I posted it here to get some traffic. Please feel free to move as you feel appropriate. He would like it to go to a good home. Trying to get a handle on it's value. I defer to the experts. |

I really like 68 GPs , but it would need to be more premier or a 428 car.
The engine might have good value if it's a 16 headed 400 from 68. Car is of little overall value as it sits. Low demand for them as always. Money Pit with diminishing returns. |

Appreciate over 100 people looking the thread over. Agree, a restoration would be a lost investment, unless someone was just in love with it. I don't think the owner has any delusions of it being worth a fortune. However, it is far better than a parts car IMO due to it being a running and driving car. So Haggerty has it listed in it's lowest condition that they call "fair" at $10,000. If you read their definition of fair, this car does not meet many facets of their "fair" definition. So that makes it half fair? So among the experts, $600.00?, $2000.00, $3500.00?, $5000.00, $7500.00? You are not going to insult me, it's not my car. Just trying to give him a reasonable expectation. Thanks.

He needs to identify his block , heads and carb.
That is potentially the highest value in parts or in whole. Otherwise it's a rusty Tijuana cartel ghetto cruiser for cheap. 1500-2200 (maybe) |

For reference here’s what an absolutely perfect one sold for 12 years ago:
https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=714168 I know the seller and I saw the car, immaculate.

I will have him verify those pieces. I am pretty certain it is original stuff. I agree with ghetto cruiser sentiment. But allot of good content on this car. Like a complete working hidden headlight system inside a very straight bumper. Or a perfect padded dash. Or a very nice console. I know having that dash redone by Just dashes would approach 2K alone at today's prices. I would hate to see it get parted out, but there is certainly good stuff on it. The unique GP etched side windows are really nice as well. I was thinking more along the lines of just making a driver out of it which wouldn't be hard. It's possible people just don't do that anymore. It is an oddball one year car for sure. Not popular in 1968 and much less now I guess. Keep the replies coming. I am going to print and share them with him once the thread dies out. Thanks everyone.

Haggerty has some out-of-touch price structures on certain models.
Remember , they SELL insurance on these. The higher they can persuade the perceived value , the higher premiums they collect. The dashpad , front seats and engine are the only concrete parting out values of the car. The type of engine is the #1 factor. Interior door panels and steering wheel are good secondary sale items. Then you have 3rd tier pieces that may never sell. A dismantler will want to at least Triple/Quadruple their investment. The lucky charm would be an owner with a rust free 428 car with fried interior and butchered hideaway assembly . aka needle in haystack , but there is always one somewhere. 67 and 68 share a certain amount of interchange. |

What did he pay for it 3-4 years ago? Start there or slightly higher and be prepared to take a haircut.
