Update
Well, I got word from Paul that the dyno was a success! No mention of a knocking noise!!! It dyno'd at 540hp and 559 ft lbs. I'll post the dyno sheet when I get it! Paul is just addressing a small valley pan leak and once that is addressed, it should be on it's way home!. I can't wait to get this motor and finally enjoy it. It's been one helluva journey but I think I'm at the home stretch!

This is great news. So many of these stories have a lousy outcome. Not with anything from Paul, just the hobby in general. You chose your builder wisely. Enjoy your car with traditional Pontiac power! That's plenty of HP to do it too!.

Glad everything worked out. I wanted Paul to build my motor but was just unable to overcome the logistics of an AZ/SC engine ship. I have found a great local builder that seems to have a fine attention to detail so hopefully I can throw up some numbers like you got. In a perfect world we could all get together and show off our cars and engines and do some real racing as well as bench racing.

The engine made 559/540 without a tapered spacer under the carb. We re-dynoed it with a tapered spacer and it ended up making 570.5 ft. lbs. @ 4400, and 539 HP at 5700 RPM. From 4700-6300 RPM it made over 500 HP. From 4000-5500 RPM it made over 500 Ft. Lbs of torque. And it made over 560 Ft. Lbs from 3800-4900 RPM. Over all, the average HP is up 10 from the previous best dyno run from the past. This was with a Carb Jeff custom built for this engine that had previously never been run or tested on anything. I'll try to scan the dyno sheets later and post them.

If at all possible you should use the as-installed EFI and spark control you intend for the car on the engine dyno. The degree of EFI tuning you can get done on an engine dyno is well beyond what you can do on a chassis dyno due to cooling limitations . The engine dyno has no such limitations. I just did my throttle body EFI 467 on the engine dyno, and the amount of tuning we accomplished was priceless. Even for the "self tune" EFI systems.

Having the engine run and tuned on an engine dyno will be a lot easier to figure out what the engine likes and thus get the system where it needs to be instead of guessing, road testing, changing, road testing until you've got it where it wants to be.

Wouldn't a chassis dyno be best? It has the real-life conditions of the installation. I don't really know anything about it though.

As testimony by all the cooling threads there are around these parts, for many people that's not realistic.

My motor won’t be going in my car for some time so hopefully I can come up with the money between now and then and find a Dyno that can deal with the fuel injection

The valley pan leak is fixed! Apparently the gasket slipped out of place when the valley pan was being installed! Paul says the oil filter was free of debris and looked good. Hopefully the motor will be on it's way home next week! Standby for burnout video(s)!

Who’d you get to build your engine 64speed? Lynch’s machine shop in Greenville builds a lot of Pontiacs.

When it comes to drivability tuning with loads and real world conditions there is nothing better than a chassis dyno. I've used them several times with no issues of any of the cars running hot. They are used all the time for consistent loads and part throttle tuning. Extremely popular with the computer and fuel injection crowd. Most of them I've been on have excellent air flow with large fans and can pretty much nail down an excellent tune in a matter of hours that would take days of driving on the street. |
