Date Codes
I have a June 28 1969 built car and trying to verify correct intake manifold.
Should the car have a 9794284 or a 9799068 Intake Manifold? I have both since either technically is a ram air III but the question are date codes. 9799068 E229 9794284 C179 What do original cars have during this time frame? Any thoughts and or comments are welcome. Thanks, Brew |

Brew, what assembly plant was your 69 Judge built?

I believe a 4284 is the correct one

Thanks! The car has a 428 in it since early seventies and it has a 9794234 dated D179 manifold. From what I found this might be the original intake?

Roger, what would the vehicle assy. plant have to do with the engine build at the Pontiac assy. plant? I haven't seen any '69 vehicles built in early July '69 with an '068 manifold, blocks maybe, but not intakes.

Was asking as the possibility of a late June of '69 Pontiac plant WS or YZ engine having a tighter date (from casting to install) is going to be greater than one from Arlington or Fremont. The only '69 Judge I have knowledge of built that late out of Arlington was a convert & years ago, the restorer was on a search for the correct intake & heads. A late May intake was sourced from a GP while I was boneyarding, I don't remember which casting # it was.

My 69 non Judge Baltimore built vert I used to own was a 4th week June build. Invoice showed shipped 6/30/69 to Canada. I know I had the 4234 intake manifold. I also believe the RA3 used the same intake as the standard 400 which mine was. I thought I had a picture of the manifold when I restored it, but I can't find it. Anyway, I'm 99% sure it was dated F159 or F219. I know the heads/intake were all within a week of each other. So the casting to install dates were really tight. Hope that helps, Jeff

I went through about a two dozen 69 intakes in my shop and on eBay, the earliest 9799068 intake I found was cast May 1st. But as mentioned above some May and June built cars seemed to have been built with 4234 intake. Logically lower volume engines could take longer to be used up. This especially in satellite plants, I saw a mid may 69 GP (home plant of course) with the 9068 (E019 cast date) but I've seen june GTO's from Baltimore and Fremont with the 4234.

just after posting the last post I see a 4234 intake appeared on eBay with a E139 date but on closer inspection the rust erosion is such that the date code is far from clear, probably a B

Thanks for the input guys. Im in no hurry and would love to find an Arlington late built car. Now that would help allot! If anyone has pictures or comes across such a car please do feel free to reach out. Will keep learning these A bods to verify before throwing any paint.

interesting;
I would have thought that intake (as well as block ect) casting numbers were model year specific, and that there would have been zero interchange; @ "north": Is it possible that the "mid may '69 GP" had a replacement manifold done for one reason or another while still under warranty? Maybe a service tech goobered one of the threaded bosses on the intake, or cracked the threaded opening for the thermostat?? Again, I had understood that casting numbers were definitely supposed to be model year specific - and somehow related to emissions certification...

I don't recall where I read this but apparently the reason for the redesign of the intake was to address a tendency of cracks to develop under the intake leading to vacuum leaks. The 9068 intake was definitely factory installed on many late 69 model production engines. I've seen way to many and the casting dates of that intake beginning in early May indicate it went onto engines well before the model year switchover.

Brian,
See if this guy has some info on his intake. It has the '69 thermostatic switch on it. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/h...980832220.html

What I was trying to say is maybe your E229 is the correct one, if the seller has info on the engine/vehicle his E209 came off of.

Yes, I got your point and have an email to seller. Just trying to note its sometimes best to purchase an item to get other items too. Will let you know if I get any feedback.
