A rather small difference in the 3 GTO air cleaner base is the "Rolled Lip Design".

64-65 has a "Bigger" bottom rolled lip as represented by their part numbers.

64-65 standard (No #614) end base is #6420479 and the center is #6420482.

64-65 Calif. (K24, #614) end base is #6420767 and the center is #6420768.
The 64-65 Calif. center has a 3 way fitting with a slight bend downward as seen in photos.

64-65 used a 90 degree steel tube #9776773 from center base to a grommet in LH valve cover.

64-65-66 used (2) - ends to center, hoses #9784235 at 4-1/2 inches long.



1966 - Last year of the Pontiac Tri-Power. The 3 air cleaner base used this year had a "Small" rolled lip on the bottom showing different part numbers. Photo shows the rolled lip difference.

66 standard (No #614) used (3) #6424292 bases.

66 Calif. (#614) end base is #6424293 and the center is #6424294.
The 66 Calif. center 3 way fitting is straight (no bend).

66 Calif. used a 90 degree rubber hose #9784820 from center base to a chrome twist in "oil fill" cap on the LH valve cover.

Also shown here are photos of the (3) flame arresters #6424267. These were issed for the 66 Tri-Powers with standard transmission and A.I.R (smog). There had been several underhood fires from the backfire on the Smog S/T GTO's.

An older gentleman that worked at a Pontiac dealer in the late 60's told me whenever a GTO with a Tri-Power came in for service they automatically installed these 3 flame arresters just as a precaution!

My 66 is an automatic with 3x2's and had these 3 flame arresters when I bought it.

The screens that the man called flame arrestors were stock on all Tripowers with the Foam Air Cleaners. The NAPA paper filters were replacement deals.

Not sure what you are referring to?

I posted part numbers above that show the "two" different screens (3) each that were used.

All 64-65-66 GTO Tri-Powers used the cylinder shape screens (3) which support the foam filters. #6420618

The 1966 issue FLAME ARRESTER screens (3) lay flat on top of the bottom base. #6424267

The different styles used -

1) Oiled foam with AC A193C that was supported by a round wire mesh screen. Factory Install.

2) AC A220C paper with a Heavy "Solder" Mesh. Very difficult to find! The 2 pics below have 1967 dated boxes.

3) AC A220C paper with a thin metal mesh (no solder). Very common today.

Ok, I see the part you have identified as a Flame Arrester screen (installed in 1966 in your picture now). I have only seen pictures of the California parts or bits and pieces.

The whole screen element can be called the flame arrester (metal top, metal bottom, and screen around the circumference typically. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/knn-59-3364

I was not aware that just the screen "Rock Catcher" over the carb stud was considered to be the flame arrester but now I know otherwise.
